I have inherited several old games, sans boxes and documentation
- Doom 1/2, Quake 1/2, MDK 1/2, Witchaven 1/2, Diablo 1/2,
Blood, Warcraft 1/2, Duke Nukem, Half-Life, and assorted extension
packs for several of these.
Some are DOS or Win95 per CD labels, but some aren't labeled. I'd
like to fuss around with these golden oldies, but have some concerns:

Can XP(Home) be made to run any or all of these games with some
hardware/software tweaks? (compatibility mode for executables
has been pretty disappointing).

Given that some installations are rude, will installing any of the
above over-write something of critical nature?

More specifically, I'd like to have a go at Half-Life, but know it has
DirectX 6.0. Will installation overwrite my DirectX 9.0c? Can XP run
this game with/without tweaks? Many Thanks for any info...Her@tic

System Specs:
MicroVel Pent4 3.2Ghz (HT) w/ 1GDDR running XP(Home) SP2, 800MHz FSB
Nvidia GE Force 128 MB PCI-E 5750 (modestly overclocked)
LogiTec X-530 5.1 speaker system
Creative Soundblaster Live 5.1

First place to check would be www.ntcompatible.com Check the listings of games and see if people got them to work on win2k/xp =]

I replaced my Creative 4.1 system for the X530's a while ago, and have been quite happy with the result.

It's a fairly bass-heavy set when it's first set up, but a few minutes spent tuning both the hardware sub control and the bass/treble equalizer in Windows can make them suit nearly any taste. The range is excellent, and I've never encountered any situation in which they sound "fake" or "tinny".

All in all, I think they're some of the best sub-$100 speakers you can find.
