Quake 4 has a neat aspect to it. Graphics are pretty good too.
IMHO, Half-Life 2 is the optime of this genre; graphics and story-line wise.
And just an FYI, these games are referred to as "FPS" (First Person Shooter). =]

Far Cry, Half-Life 2, Gun, F.E.A.R., and Quake 4, in that order, would be my recommendations. Edward.

Half Life on and Half Life 2 would be my single-player recommendations.
For multiplayer, Unreal Tournament 2004.

My best singleplayer FPS would certainly be Half Life 2 or Quake 4. It desapointed me when i played them on multiplayers though, so if u want to buy a game that your gonna play for a long time i wouldnt recommend to buy these 2 games.
Battlefield 2 would be my vote since its a multiplayers game and everyone knows good multiplayers game can last an eternity.
U should have wrote down your cpu specs in your post cuz u gotta keep in mind that these games require a very good PC.
Here are the specs u need to play Battlefield 2:
Minimum requirements:
1.7 GHz CPU
512mb RAM
1.4 shader model videocard being ATI Radeon 8500 or above
NVIDIA Geforce FX or above (Geforce 4 series will not work).
Recommended requirements:
2.5 GHz CPU
1 Gigabyte of RAM
Radeon X800 or higher
Geforce 6800 or higher
If you dont meet the minimum requirements, don't bother buying these 3 games. Instead id recommend u to buy HalfLife 1 & Counter-Strike, its still one of the most populated FPS game.
Here are some links with a more detailed description of each games that will help you choose a game;

F.E.A.R. for physics/graphics/gameplay/AI/flow, and UT2004 for mods/creativity. But, if you don't like playing through things more than once, get the latter; F.E.A.R. is very, very short at only about 10 hours long, while UT has so many extra mods/maps that you could play it forever and not experience the same thing twice. :D:

Just a few that I feel are missing in action here - Call of Duty 1+2, Unreal2 and yes - go for Doom3(real no brainer, but i like it)

Have you tried tactical/squad based FPS? They're a lot of fun IMO. I had a good time with SWAT4 (can't wait for Stetchkov Syndicate), Brothers in Arms (both games) and Republic Commando.

I'd also recommend F.E.A.R. and FarCry. And Call of Duty 2. All great games.

Haven't played FEAR yet, but I can tell you that FarCry is $20 right now, and to me it has some of the sweetest graphics to date....the game play is awesome too. I really enjoyed Half Life 2....it has a nice flow to it. I own Quake 4, but it hasn't "grabbed" me yet.....I still love Quake 3.
FarCry or Half Life 2 and you will not be dissappointed.

Damn you all livin in the States. I'm from the U.S. but I'm livin in Europe right now, Ireland to be exact and broadband to us is like the Holy Grail. Hence internet gaming for me is not an option. By the way Enemy FSP was a typo meant to say FPS.
