whats causing lag

i have noticed tht when im playing games such as battlefield 1942 and half life 2 (demo for now :thumbup: ) every few seconds it lags. its really annoying.
i have an amd 64bt 3200+ cpu with a 256mb g-card but only 512mb of ram, although it only shows 448mb on system properties.
could the lack of ram be the problem

Ram could be the problem, but I run hl2 with 512 ram myself and that does not happen. Try turning shadows off and maybe other bells and whistles. Try running low details and see what happens. It may make a difference. As for bf1942, I do not have that, but its probably online lag. Hope this helps.
