We should also know what video card you are running, that is the most important requirement to running most games.

If you are looking for a good DnD adventure, grab Neverwinter Nights. It has two expansions, and some paid add-ons. The new Diamond pack gives it all to you for $30! Required 450MHz CPU, 128MB of RAM (though it hugely benefits from this!), and a 16MB video card which is really modest.

Without a doubt,Newegg.com (http://www.newegg.com). I am sure many people on this forum could back me up on that one. Upgrading the video card and RAM will see a huge leap in performace for you. Your CPU is not top of the line, but it is comparable to mine, and I am doing just fine. Especially if you are looking for some RPGs. Your best bet at the moment as bang for buck would probably be a GeForce 6600GT for about $150.

As Donshyoku stated, Neverwinter Nights is an excellent D&D game based on the 3.0 ruleset.

However, if you do not mind going back to 2.0, the Baulders Gate series is absolutely fantastic and should be relatively cheap and easy to find. I usually find a few copies of Baulders Gate 2 at my local EB in the used PC section.

If you are looking to build worlds, you might want to check out Civ 3. Although four just came out, Civ 3 might be a better alternative for your computer specs. This is a turn based stratagy game where you build an empire to conquer the world in one form or another (through war, or diplomacy, or being the first to build a ship to Alpha Centauri). It is an incredibly deep game and one that really could last you years.

On the flip side, if you are looking for something more mindless, Diablo 2 and expansion is one of my favorite games. The story itself probably occupies about 20 minutes total, but the hack and slash aspect will have you playing for a very long time.

These few games should get you going. None of them are cutting edge (though Neverwinter Nights is only about two years old now), but they are recommended for gameplay and substance rather then the newest graphics. Happy Gaming.

whoa, yea, you defiently defiently need you upgrade your video card, defiently.

I'd suggest an Ati 9800 or a comparable Geforce card.

As far as rpgs go, there's not really many that allow you to build an "army" and such, cept the latest one I know of that allows it, Spellforce I.

You can find vids/demos for it here:
http://www.3dgamers.com/games/spellforce/downloads/

It's like an RPG/RTS mix that lets you build up your own army and such.

There's a sequel being developed for it aswell.

I also recommend Neverwinter nights, Dungeon siege I/II (more of a diablo'ish style game then neverwinter nights).

You need to wait to next year to see some new D&D games like Never Winter Night 2.
In this year, RPG that i played is
- Star Wars: Knight of the old replubic 2 the Sith lords -: really good RPG, Combat system is similally D&D Style.
- Dungeon Siege 2 -: Action RPG, hack/slash , tons of enemies
- Fable -: quit good with story line but too short
- X-Men Legends 2 Rise of Apocalypse -: Hey, it's really good game. Do not judge this game with screenshots because it really fun.

yea you DEFINATELY need a better GFX. You can get one with 128mb for fairly cheap nowdays and frankly if RPG's and such is all you are playing that's all you would really need.

I have a few recommendations for you. To begin, three of the greatest CRPGs ever made; Planescape Torment, Fallout 1 and Fallout 2.
In Planescape Torment you are a character in the D&D Planescape universe who awake on a mortuary table with a floating skull as your guide. It follows the familiar, "How did I get here?" type of storyline, but it does so very well. There are a total of eight other adventurers who will join your cause all with intriguing backstories of their own. This is my favorite RPG of all the time. The story, characters, and skill progression are all excellent. You can actually make interesting choices that affect who you are as a character, which is something that other games try to do but don't succeed at very well. There are a couple new games that do make you feel like you're actually shaping a character and those are Fable and Star Wars KOTOR, although I don't feel that the stories found in those games were quite as well put together as Torment's.
Fallout 1 and 2 are easily my second two favorite RPG's, the Baldur's Gates being a distant fourth and fifth. The Fallout games are set in a post-apocolyptic universe where mutant animals and thugs wander the countryside. You play the role of a hero (or the only one foolish enough to take on the task) who has lived in a place called Vault 13. Unfortunately, the Vault's water chip has failed and it's our hero who must go out and find a new water chip. The story is intriguing as you travel all over the land attempting to find a new water chip. Many people on the outside sense your plight and use you to accomplish their own means. The game's combat is turn based and very fun.
In Fallout 2 you play as a warrior who must help save his people. Much of what I said about Fallout 1 applies to Fallout 2 as well. It's just a bit bigger and better.
Since it seems like you enjoy the strategy aspect of gaming I would also recommend Warcraft 3. It's mostly an RTS, but with the introduction of hero units that stay with you through each campaign. It's an excellent game.
Also, if you want to command large armies I would recommend the Total War games as those model large scale battle well and are fun.
Your probably won't need an upgrade to play either Torment or the Fallout games, but for either Warcraft or the Total War games you will need a new graphics card and more memory, although it seems like you're well on your way to that.

thanks again guys i have added some of you to my aol messenger might need some other games from all of you

i'm gonna go buy torment it sounds like my type of game where other characters join your team along the way i like the ones you can't control like in Fable when you could hire some people and he just helped you fight you didn't have to control him(but he never was much help)

i wish i would of beat fable but i got really deep into the game then i had to give my friend his Xbox back and we all know once you get deep into a game its hard to buy it and start over cause you know it takes to long to get back to the point you was at

I would recommend an older RPG.. Heretic II. Great detail, good action, different camera setups, and you use "magic" as the weapons. Great final "boss battle", too. Good triumphs over evil! It should work decently on older PIII systems running faster than 750 Mhz with 512 Mb RAM and 16 Mb video.
Check your mobo specs.. see how much AGP acceleration is the max. A 4x should provide great detail, with only 128 Mb, but an 8x would be the optimum with 256 Mb. Both nVidia and ATI chipsets are favored for the graphics engine.
An old rule still applies.. deactivate any unneeded background programs, to free up CPU cycles and memory for better performance!

I wouldn't willingly go anywhere under a Geforce 5200 if you're wanting something cheap. With prices as cheap as they are nowadays for a gig of value ram and a 6600gt, there is really no reason to spend any less and by any of the fx cards, and the performance gain you'll get from new tech will allow you to play most any game currently out, allbeit on low to medium settings. Still about 1000 times better than what you're running now though

256mb mem on todays cards is standard, but 128 will get the job done. On rpgs, I find it better to have more vram since entire landscapes are buffered into the ram. The less ram, the more choppy gameplay tends to be. Not always, but for me it has been.

Most people recommend newegg, but I've got some slamming deals on Ebay before.. just make sure you buy new factory sealed parts. You can always check on www.guru3d.com and check their forums. Lots of people are selling cheap gear because they all want to upgrade heh :)
