'Shrek 2' Shakes Up Box Office with Record Opening

"Shrek 2," a cartoon revolving around a green ogre and his princess bride, trampled even the most optimistic forecasts as it set several new opening records at the weekend box office and kick-started the lucrative summer movie-going season into high gear.

The animated sequel sold about $125.3 million worth of tickets in its first five days of release across North America, its distributor, DreamWorks, said on Sunday.

If figures hold when final numbers are released on Monday, the total haul will set a new record for a Wednesday release, beating the $124.1 million earned by "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" last December.

I blame the crap that's been out for movies lately. The only thing really worth seeing for like the past six weeks was Troy. I can see why this one would do well.

Well deserved. Puss n Boots had me rolling, what a great character.

That's only part of the reason though.

Shrek had a huge turnout last time, it's well loved, and the expectation was high. In addition - it's got a very wide appeal across almost all spectrums - from kids to adults who love the humour.

The other big movies of the year (Passion and Troy) don't have nearly this appeal, demographically.

I also adore the untra simple, brilliantly conceived aqnd instantly identifiable movie logo of the big green 2 with the little Shrek ears or whatever the heck those things are.

Cheers, Terry

Shrek 2 was a fine movie, animated or otherwise. Great animated graphics, classic humor, and characters you can identify with. I loved it and thought it was better than the original.

Shrek 2 may have set a new record, but that will almost certainly be smashed as soon as Titanic II: The Sequel (http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/6174/davebarry-titanicsequel-script.htm) comes out (also staring Leonardo DiCaprio).

:D:

lol, great link Gaim! That columnist is one of my absolute faves!

So I have to admit: Kathy and I went to see Shrek 2 tonight, and it was hilarious. One of the best movies I've seen in a very long time, so I will retract any snide remarks forthwith, and will proceed to recommend it to any and all who like to laugh. There are so many great scenes in this flick that I will not focus on any of them. I will only say: GO SEE IT!
