GuruReview have thrown up a new review entitled Athlon 64 FX 53 - Benchmarked in 32 & 64 bit Environments ! Here's a snip.

It's AMD's intention to only have one of their “enthusiast” CPUs available at one time, so as the AFX 53 was introduced the AFX 51 was officially discontinued, though it can still be found at some online retailers or bought second hand. There was a requirement for the FX53 to be released as the fastest Athlon 64, the 3400+, which runs at 2.2GHz is actually faster than the AFX 51 in some software. This was mainly due to the AFX 51's requirement of higher latency registered RAM, but in order to make a noticeable gap between the fastest A64 and AFX AMD decided to bump the AFX's clock speed up. The clock speed has therefore gone up to 2.4GHz for the AFX 53 compared to the the AFX 51's 2.2GHz.

The chip may be fast, but not so much so that it's worth twice that of the AMD64 +3400, which is why they probably did not throw that cpu in the comparison.

Check other benchmarks(I think Tom's Hardware has one) that do a comparison with Intel, the 64FX and the 64+3400.

cheers!
