This has been done before, but it's been awhile and not on this forum.
Who are your favorite authors.
I like science fiction (not much of a fantasy fan) so my favorite authors are C. J. Cherryh, Asimov, Clarke, and Heinlein to name a few.

Terry Pratchett: an obvious choice, I mean who doesn't like him?
Steven Erikson: The *best* Fantasy author alive. The reason you probably haven't heard of him is because his books haven't been published in the US yet, and that's a great shame, because there's no one that comes even to his ankles when it comes to writing fantasy.
Roger Zelasney: His Amber series was brilliant, and his other books are great too.
China Miéville: Very cool steam punk writer. His incredibly inventive, and his novels are proof of an amazingly vivid imagination.
Neil Gaiman: "American Gods" was awesome.

Terry Pratchett, Stephen King, Raymond Feist, Allen Steele, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Larry Niven, Cage Baker, Wilbur Smith (River God), Gary Jennings (Aztec), J.K. Rowling, Vernor Vinge, David Brin and China Mieville.
I'm reading a lot of Dan Brown lately. While I don't think he's the greatest author (I think his style is a bit sparse), I still love his books. They're quite intriguing.
[edited to add Feist, Brin and Vinge]

Its a little ironic to me that you should start this thread at this time. I don't read nearly as much as I did in the past, but for some reason, I just finished a "reading binge," where I read two Stephen King/Peter Straub books in three days. They were The Talisman and Black house, and they were both over six-hundred pages; so it was a lot of reading, but they were both excellent; and I thoroughly enjoyed them.
I love all the science fiction masters, but; these days, I'm really not in touch with newer authors, and most of my reading is books that friends loan me and say, "This is good." I forget how pleasurable a good book is, sometimes; but it always comes back to me once I start reading, again. Edward.

Darren Shan, Eric Nylund. I dont really have favorites. i just read books that enjoy me. then if i like that book i'll try to see if there is a series attached to that book. like Darren Shan who writes the Cirque Du Freak Series. for some reason i've really gotten interested in those vampire books.
