This is a question for all you KOTOR experienced players:
***Spoilers***
Right now I'm on the second planet, and I'm following the light side. I have Bastila with me and my main character is a Jedi Guardian. I also have Carth with me using to blaster guns, although he doesn't seem very effective at killing people.
***End of Spoilers***
So what is the most effective team for combat?

I found it was usually a mistake not to have another Jedi in my group but it kind of depends on who you are fighting. When you start facing groups of Dark Jedi, it's tough if your character is the only Jedi in the group. Carth gets better as he levels. Pay attention to what skills he gets. Don't always go with the recommended. It sometimes recommends some strange things. Also, make sure you use the workbench to upgrade weapons, light sabres, armour, etc....
One last tip, the disable/destroy droid Jedi feat will help you greatly at the end of the game. I never saw a use for it so never selected it for my character and had a hard time at the end.
May the force be with you.

I generally found that blasters were pretty ineffective. In fact, once you have a couple more Jedi available, you'll probably use them almost exclusively. The other characters were grossly under-powered, and they are taking steps to correct this in KOTOR 2.
Anyway, some suggestions: have you used the work bench to upgrade carth's blasters? This will get a bit more juice out of them. Also, make sure when he levels that you take blaster/ranged weapons feats to further increase his power. You can do this with Mission, Zalbar and Canderous as well.
Finally, when you look at their character screens (I think it is) you can set scripting for your characters. If you make Carth (and any other gunners) grenadiers as well as gunners, they'll use any grenades you have, if safe to do so, before resorting to blasters.
Hope that helps!

The party I usually used was my character (duh), Bastila and Jolee. Bastila was mostly another tank and Jolee would take care of the healing and other force powers.
After that certain part of the storyline I replaced Bastila with Canderous, because I realized he was an asswhooping machine with melee weapons (that sith lord's sword on Korriban for example). Sometimes I used HK-47 but that was mostly for his hilarious commentary :):
Still, having another jedi is almost mandatory.

HK-47 and Canderous were both a little better than Carth. HK-47 also has the added benefit of not needing health kits. I always had tons of repair kits. I never had much use for Jolee. I preferred the striped Jedi girl. Either way you need to make sure and upgrade the light sabers everyone is using. Makes a big difference.

I found a white cristal in one of the ruins in Dantoeen (the second planet), should I put it in my main character's light saber? Or should I leave the slots open for better cristals??

You can use it now. If you find something better later, you can swap them out. The upgrade is not permanent. I was swapping them around all of the time looking for the most effective combinations. The center crystal on the light saber upgrade only effects the color of the blade. The ones on the sides effect damage and attack probabilities.

***NEW QUESTION***
Jedi robes or heavy armour? I usually use Bastila and Jolee and I have them using jedi robes, but I keep getting into trouble when fighting dark jedi.

I prefer to use heavy armor, because you can still use some of the force powers, and you actually get defence.

Oh how much do I regret using the "recomended" level up during the first few levels. Isn't there a way that I can remove the horrible mistakes the "recomended" settings did? A trainer or something?

I don't think you can remove them. I don't know of a way to do so.

No, you can't backtrack when you make levelling errors, so make damn sure you've got what you want.
As for armor, it all depends on how you play. I was a pure melee Jedi, so I used the heaviest armor I could find. With the other Jedi, I left them with Robes because they were technically my "casters" and needed access to all their powers. I just made sure I had all the enemies focused on me instead of them.
