It's not made of gold — just eggs, lobster, caviar and a few trimmings. But an omelet on the menu of a swanky Manhattan hotel will set you back $1,000, plus tip.

The tip alone at %15 is $150.00. Course; if you spent $1000 on an omelet I guess another $150 is no big deal. I would never, even if I were a multi-millionaire spend money that frivolously.

The restaraunt next door to this place should sell identical omelets for $500. They would make a killing.

I'm suprised J-Lo (http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/lopezrider1.html) isn't adding one of these to her rider for every appearance....
And a 15% tip would be reported in the gossip papers as "being stingy".

It only makes sense if you read the last part of that article as follows.

The omelet, which debuted May 5 and is billed as the "Zillion Dollar Frittata (search)," has six eggs, a lobster and — here's the kicker — 10 ounces of sevruga caviar (search). The restaurant pays $65 an ounce for the caviar, according to Norma's general manager, Steven Pipes.
"Since we knew it was going to be a very expensive dish, we decided to have some fun with it," Pipes told the News. "It's not just a gimmick, though. It tastes good."
Beside the omelet's entry in the menu is the following message: "Norma dares you to expense this."
No one has ordered it yet.
A "budget" version of the omelet, containing only one ounce of caviar, sells for $100.

Caviar on an omelet? :wtf: No wonder no-one has tried it yet. It's not the price, it's the foodpoisoning you're bound to get after trying that combination.
Actually it's not that bad an idea. Just throw everything expensive together in one dish, ask a fortune for it, and watch the celebrities stand in line to try it. They'll try anything, as long as there's a hefty price tag on it.

Actually, a wonderful appetizer for parties is homemade egg salad spread about one inch deep in a serving dish then covered with a thin layer of good caviar and about a quarter inch of fresh sour cream. This is served chilled with fresh lemon or lime wedges and study crackers like melba toast for dipping. It is especially nice with icey cold vodka gimlets or dry vodka martinis.
Cheers, Terry
