Barely a PC gaming fan has ignored F.E.A.R., the latest first-person project from veteran developer Monolith (No One Lives Forever, Tron 2.0). with its eye-widening visuals, genuinely spooky set-pieces, and FPS pedigree, the title has our attention, too. Good thing, then, that VU Games is ready to let us all play.
This Friday, at 10 AM to be precise, Vivendi will release the single-player demo for F.E.A.R. The demo will offer a single level featuring "intense and exhilarating action" and "pulse-quickening paranormal chills."
* Excellent............ :yes:

Can't wait for this... I wasent impressed with the Multi player. It was too easy for me to just walk right over people in the game which to me is not really fun. The Real time tech trailer was kick @$$ though...

Whelp... it's Friday @ 5:09am EDT. In the spirit of an old commercial from Wendy's burger chain... "Where's The Demo!!!!"
Hehe... didn't really expect the demo to be up so early. Just thought I might get lucky before I have to go to work!

The official word is 10:00 am PDT.
In practice, with a demo that's anticipated this much, anything could happen, so stay tuned.

NNNNNNNNnnnnnnnnnnnnnnooooooooooooooo [In that cheesy Darth vader voice]
Not again... Yet another game I placed a pre-order on... I think I will be broke soon with all the pre-Orders I keep doing lately. Anyway, I really did like the single player so far with excellent graphics (All on max) and even for a 1st person shooter it feels new and different somehow. The Enemy AI on harder settings actually feel like your playing against reall people and not some brainless bots that can see through everything. Maybe it was just the situation in the way things happen but ether way it plays out good.

Well my system is a bit lower than the "recommended" hardware... which says:
P4 3Ghz or higher
2G Ram
Video card Gforce 5900 or higher with 256 video ram.
My system barely meets the minimum..... I have:
AMD 1.7Ghz
1G Ram
Gforce 5700 Ultra with 128mb of Video Ram......
As such, I have the settings on "Meduim", with the Resolution at 1024, and I'm still getting framerates at about 5-10 fps... which is making me sick...
:doa:
I'm going to try and tweak with it some more, and see if I can get it playable.

I'm getting some bad pauses that happen each time you run into one of those "events" (Ie the tile falling, among the other things).
Like each time I get near the event my game freezes up a few seconds and then it goes back to normal...
Soft shadows off, all medium details -
Amd 64 3400
768ddr
geforce 6800 ultra...
The MP beta ran fine for me @ max settings...

mine doesnt run at all!
d3dx9_25.dll was not found. Bah!
Anyone know why? ill mess about with direct x for a bit
Ron
August 5th, 2005, 05:44 pm
ouch... Runs fine on two of my 6800gt system with max on everything:
Intel P4 3.2 (775)
Soltek SL-865Pro-775
1gig DDR400 Kingston HyperX
Apogee 6800GT (AGP)
Creative SB Live 5.1
Intel P4 3.4 (775)
Asus P5GD1
1gig DDR400 Kingston HyperX
eVGA 6800GT (PCI-e)
Creative Audigy 2 ZS
On the AGP system things ran just a tiny bit slow at first but after a few mins it ran the same as my other 6800GT system.

Ok, well I got it to run smooth now... at 800 x 600.
I can have everything at Medium, and world textures at high. It looks ok, better than I expected it to, so I might look at getting this when it comes out. I am part-way through... just after you pass the first water area, and come to an Office with a crackled-glass window in the door. The AI is pretty darn good so far,.. better than I can remember the other games AI being, but I'm sure after you play this long enough, somebody will figure out a pattern to these guys too.

It states in the read me that i will get the "d3dx9_25.dll was not found" error if I do not have the June edition of dx9c? It self installs what it calls an April edition! microsofts site claims the latest version was brought out in 2004!
Im off to bed, having NOT played the demo

I can't even get it to DL anywhere. I am getting speeds or 8-10Kbps on Filerush, 3D Gamers, Gamespot DLX, and Gamer's Hell is too full for me to even jump on!
I just let it go for a few hours. I am now going to search around for it a bit again. Hopefully, the Huns have it by now.

The games running fine here, the combats nice and hard like Far Cry.

I upgraded my drivers to the 80.x series and it seemed to help with the pauses, but i'm still getting these like......black "Blobs" that flash on the character models....annoying.

Agreed. This game feels like a 3rd person action/adventure game played in first person. The bloody hallway scene was perfect. Anyone try shooting the blood? Hehe.
Only changes I would make would be to have the environment more interactive and remove the slow-mo ability. Seemed a little out of place for me.

Played it last night and enjoyed it. Looks like this game will get added to my must buy list... although I may wait awhile after it is released to pick it up.
Strange thing happened when I went to fire up the demo this morning. I got an error message that said
"License Data is Invalid. Please Contact Customer Support"!
Tried downloading another copy of the demo and reinstalling but the same message comes up. Anyone run across this and a fix for it?

I finally got it DLed after letting it sit at about 25-30K all night. I am going to play here in a moment after I make my rounds on the board.

finished the demo, im not going to spoil it but :scared:
Its nice for a game to slap a mature cert on it AND be mature about the material in it. This is what it says it is Ring + matrix. I find all that eastern horror really scary - ring, audition, dark water, Phone etc so for me this works much better than other titles.
shudddder im off to turn all the lights on, put the TV in the garden and turn all the lights on. But what if hair is coming out my taps???? :eek2:

This game kicks so much ass, in that I was able to run it at 1024X768 with 4xAFF and 6xFSAA with some effects and minimum lighting enabled and it looked incredible - didn't even turn on shaders and think I had it on medium textures.
The sheer amount of things happening, lighting and things flying through the air is amazing. I actually liked the slo-mo - just more variety/options/strategy to use.
At one point an enemy tried to knock over a bookshelf for cover - thought that was pretty cool, great AI, although they have no qualms flipping out of a window in front of you and facing you head on...will never get that in these games. Like the recoil effect to with the weapons.
Definitely a must buy.

I really enjoyed it.
That part when the girl appeared when I was going down the steps! Gaaaah!
I really think that it will be one of those games you run through and never play again. I doubt the MP, and from what I hear in the FilePlanet MP demo, isn't going to be any more than the usual. This will be one to pick off of the clearance rack or buy preowned, and I am sure it will be worth all $30 when that time rolls around!

Like Far Cry I'll certainly play it more than once through, unlike HL2 and Doom 3 which bored me to tears. I'm a sucker for production values and eye candy if it's a good got good mechanics. Too bad the demo is so short.

Hi everyone. I too am having those really annoying 'pauses' in the demo. I think it's because of the texture resolution. When I set to medium instead of max I don't get any pauses at all. I'm also using two 7800 GTX cards in Sli mode and would have thought it would have runa little smoother. Surely two of these cards are enough!!!? all other detials are set at maximum and have got 8XSli anti-aliasing ans soft shadows. Anyone else with a good setup getting these pauses?

Here (http://www.tweakguides.com/FEAR_1.html)'s a tweak guide for the demo that contains a bunch of tweaks to improve the performance of the demo. Might be useful!

Strangely enough I didn't get any pauses the 1st time I played the DEMO all settings on max. The only thing I can think of is that I didn't reboot after that DirectX installed (During the DEMO install). Now that I have since rebooted and a few days later I tried the DEMO again and now I'm getting the pauses towards the end of the demo (during the hallway sequence) but it seems as though it's loading off the hard drive and pauseing the game while its playing.
