View Full Version : E3 Boring

Is anyone else getting the feeling the E3 is just boring this year? There have been very few surprises, almost non-existent PC game news that is anything new, etc.

I don't know. Last year we were all taken aback by HL2 and some other good surprises. This year, the only thing that has shocked me was that Link actually grew up in the next Zelda game. The rest of the news from E3 has been met with a big "meh" from me

I don't think so. There's the Phantom, PSP, and new gameboy in the hardware section.

The Phantom is a joke and there was so much leaked about the PSP and DS that there was nothing really new at E3. Like I said, there are too few good surprises this year.

I can see it now. Out of frustration you hit the keyboard. Of course, you hit it hard enough that it slams down and breaks your right hand on the mouse.

E3 will never be boring as long as there are booth babes.

there is couple of good games listed and some stuff I downloaded (movies and such):

F.E.A.R. (awesome graphics from the movie and screenies. Half Life 2, Doom 3, FarCry, and STALKER have some serious competition)

Ground Control 2 (mainly a new trailer released. Good stuff and cant wait for this awesomeness)

Evil Genius ( new trailer, game is very similar to Dungeon Keeper =])

Dark Age of Camelot: Catacombs (some GS impressions. They seem to like the changes very much)

Imperator (From makers of Dark Age of Camelot)
In gameplay terms, one of the main design goals of Imperator is to steer away from the online RPG convention of requiring lots and lots of legwork. Instead of presenting gamers with a huge, sprawling expanse to trudge across, Mythic will instead focus on creating densely detailed, interesting, and useful zones--no filler. As well, players will be able to hop from one area to another using convenient means of transportation like a high-speed metro or an interstellar shuttle service. Ain't the future grand? At any rate, all this should allow gamers to focus on the core gameplay, and on doing things like engaging in combat, socializing, or crafting.
Sounds good to me.

Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth (a gameplay movie from the show, looks really good)

The Matrix Online (as silly as it is, the screenshots and gamespot impressions are pretty neat. If done right, this can be a major MMORPG player)

Medieval Lords: Build, Defend, Expand (Think of this as Sim City the medieval style. My only concern is that its Monte Cristo Multimedia who is behind as the developer. They can take a really good idea and somehow screw it up in someway. Start-Up 2000 is a perfect examply. The game is good, but it lacks something)

Prince of Persia 2 (looks good. Hope the game is twice as long as original though)

Rome: Total War (some impressions and new screenies along with a new official trailer. Awesome stuff)

Ghost Recon 2 (new impressions and screenies posted)

Wartime Command: Battle for Europe 1939-1945 (This 3D real-time strategy game takes place during World War II, and it's being developed by the same team that brought you IL-2 Sturmovik. The game looks really good)

And this is just my quick listing for the PC stuff =]

Bah! There's plenty of off-duty strippers here, why would I waste time in LA to see the same thing here for a lot less.

Some good examples Zedd, but still not much compared to prior years, especially since I don't play MMORPG's.

So there are few surprises. *shrug*

I think the main reason is that the big announcements were last year - and this is the catch up E3 for those announcements and the delays on big names.

But that doesn't mean it's boring - on the contrary, it's good to see the amount of high quality material being released for viewing. HL2 is looking good, as are so STALKER, Fable, etc.

Yup, I'm pretty happy with the things I've seen thus far. No diappointment at all here.

I should make myself clear, I am not disappointed with the games at all. That's all fine and good. What is disappointed is that E3 is about shock value. It always has been, and I thought it would be. This year it's like, here's some playable demos of upcoming games that we let the press play weeks ago and already report it to you.

The best shock came from Nintendo and started things off with a bang, then there was nothing but fizzle, kind of like those ladies up there.

The games are all great, but other than Nintendo's unveiling of the new Zelda, there was nothing really new. If I wanted this coverage, well I already get it from gaming media year round, which means the exact same coverage from a big convention in LA once a year becomes a non-event.

That being said, next year's E3 will be kicking again as a new round on "console wars" starts with all the new console hardware likely being in attendance. Say what you want about the console wars, but all the companies trying to one-up each other is a hell of a lot of fun to observe.

A lot more exciting than "here's our game, we are progressing, here are a few more levels to show you, blah, blah, blah..."

Sorry Bruenor, I misunderstood you. I do that sometimes...

In terms of shock value, yeah, there doesn't seem to have been much. I liked the coverage I've seen of Dragon Age, and yes, the new Zelda was a cool surprise, but we've yet to see anything significant from the major players that we didn't already know about. I agree.

But I don't agree with you on the girls. The brunette is quite attractive, IMO.

I wouldn't say it's boring, there's a lot of cool stuff coming from E3, but I do see your point, and I agree with it. There isn't really anything new and exciting announced, there aren't any shocks.

To be honest, the new Zelda was mentioned before E3 as part of quite a few rumor mills, so even that wasn't quite a shock (though the video I am sure still blew many people away, including me). Honestly though, how can you really shock people anymore other then a new console launch from a huge company who has some in house titles? Small and independent companies have the best chance now since no one is looking at them to begin with, but once they make their first big game, the scrutiny begins. With leaks happening all the time with big games, having one place (E3) to launch surprises is for the most part going to be fairly non-existent in the future. Information is too easy to obtain now.

The HL2 video is simply amazing. The way the girl (don't know her name) is looking at you and then turns to see and listen the other guy is simply amazing. She moves her eyes, she changes her pose and she actually looks alive. I have never seen that in any game before.

And yeah, the booth babes are hot.

You guys aren't serious gamers if you only look at the E3 info to check out the booth babes.. why bother with them when there are UPCOMING GAMES! *drools*

(If you want chicks go to clubs/pubs). ;)
Save E3 for games etc.

I think that the reason you think that there is no surprises and new news is cus all the hype is over what we allready know, the big games! HL2, Doom3, so on and so forth, if you look slightly deeper behind all the crap we know allready, then there is lots of news on loads of new games which havn't been announced before of known of. (alot of which zeddicus mentioned :))
