It looks like the release date is "Holidays 2004" but there are two great videos from the Rollercoaster Tycoon site (http://www.rollercoastertycoon2.com/).
I played Rollercoaster Tycoon and its expansions forever. I loved playing in a sandbox mode and experimenting with the whims of the simple crowd mechanics. While it wasn't very complex, it was darned satisfying to see your peeps rush to a new attraction or ride... or see everyone buy the new T-shirt, umbrella or other souvenier.
The coaster editor in RCT2 was long overdue, but I was a little disappointed by it. Despite not purchasing the sequel, I still play the original and boot it up for kids who come over. All ages seem to love it, and in different ways. But it's very satisfying and a relatively non-violent game except when the coasters crash and derail.
I loved looping coasters around each other, building up a park and adding more and more rides. It made me appreciate the really great and beautiful parks. I noticed landscaping more in the ones I visited. I noticed placement of benches, lights and trash cans.
I anticipate RCT3, though! That looks like a dream come true. Nice night shots, too. I wonder if we can play with the night lighting in the game? That would be sweet! I think I'm going to enjoy this one. The riding coasters looks pretty detailed. I hope that it runs as great as it looks.
From the official site (http://www.rollercoastertycoon2.com/):
Q: Will RCT3 have a sandbox mode? How is this implemented?
A: Yes (cue the sound of cheers from around the world..)! Very simple - you can put anything you like into your park, with the one caveat that a small amount of content is unlock able throughout the game. So straight off the bat you'll be able to use pretty much everything in your park, but to get a truly complete-ist buzz you have some serious Tycoon-ing to do!
Yes! A serious sandbox mode! Previous sandboxes, IIRC, involved trainers or separate editors.
[W]e've tried to ensure that the themes we do are relatively rich compared to some in previous incarnations of the game, so as well as rides & attractions there are always also building sets, staff uniforms, foliage, benches, lamps and so on. We have also tried to incorporate this into the gameplay in subtle ways, so that now, for example, a Peeps impression of a park is partly based on the coherency of the themeing.
Anyone else excited about this game? It will be a bit of a wait, but it seems to be worth it.
