I have a cold, so I haven't been on the boards much. But I would like to know what your favorite cold remedy is.

A number of years ago, I was visiting a friend in England when I caught a bad cold. I didn't have long to stay, so irregardless of the cold, I went on a small day tour out of London. We went to Blenheim. I don't really remember much of that palace, because I felt so bad, I just flew through and went back to my bus. My bus driver was talking to another bus driver. They asked why I had returned so soon. I told them. Their recommendations was to visit a package store (not their term) and buy some whiskey. Go home and drink said whiskey and wrap myself up in blankets and sweat out the cold. I didn't try their remedy, so I don't know if it would have worked. What would y'all recommend I try?

I'm sorry you are feeling bad, Paula. I hope you get over it, soon. I've tried "toddys" of one kind or another (whiskey, lemon, and honey, etc.) over the years, and they do seem to break a fever; but aspirin, Tynenol, etc., do the same thing without upsetting your stomach. I suspect the main benefit of whiskey medicines is to help you sleep.

Alas, you already know the best way to treat a cold; I'm sure. Control the fever, lots of rest, chicken soup, and whatever sympathy you can attract will cure it in a week. Ignore it and suffer, and it will go away in seven days.

I've already had my springtime cold, so I should be good to go for a while. I usually only catch one a year, or less. I have noticed in the last few years that colds seem to take longer to get over than they used to, even for young people.

Anyway, you have my sympathy; and the only other advice would be a good book, but I know you've got that covered. Heh, heh. Feel better. Edward.

Doctors tell you to drink plenty of liquids, right? Liquor dehydrates your system, the opposite of what drinking liquids would do. I just take some Advil Cold & Flu medicine or AlkaSeltzer Cold medicine. Both work very well for me.

By the way, I love living in Louisiana where I can go to damn near ANY store and buy alcohol. I remember being in Virginia in the Army and looked all over the supermarket for beer and finally asked where it was...they told me it was about a mile down the street at the "package" store. Just why is it called "package" anyway? Why conceal the name of the product like that? Just call it a liquor store. Or just sell it at supermarkets and Wal-Marts like God intended. I should be allowed to buy Jim Beam and a package of new underwear in the same store if I want to.

I drink a bottle of water, fill and repeat then get lots of rest. Usually watching the price is right helps.

drinking lots of water, taking Echinaccea (sp?), Vitamin C (1000mg/day), and home-made chicken soup always do the trick for me. I hardly ever get sick, but when I do, I use this method and I'm up and running again in about three days.

Hope you feel better soon, Mara

.

I just do the usual.

Drink lots of water, OJ, hot tea with fresh lemon, chicken broth - whatever soothes your throat, clears your sinuses, quenches your thirst and makes you feel a little better.

Other than that, stay warm and dry, get as much sleep as possible and take some aspirin. If your sniffles and cough are just intolerable, then also take an over the counter flu and cold remedy - preferably one that is served as a warm / hot liquid. If your throat is sore, then gargle with some warm (not too hot), salty (not too salty) water as long and deep as you can stand.

Cheers, Terry
