Ok, I am sorry if someone find this post against some rules or whtever, but at this point I hve no reason to think tehre is anything against it.
This site http://www.the-underdogs.org has many old pc games which companies have released and allowed for distribution. Thats what I was told, since some game they have for download, some they provide a link where you can buy it. It has a bunch of priceless good old platformers which were lost in history, but are still fun. not just platformers but some 3d games as well.
I think you definately should check out their game lists and screenshots that come with the title.

Ya, I think we had this thread pinned on the old forums.
Maybe we could "move" that post over here again, since it had alot of good info. on it.

I don't think there's a problem with that link here, Yuriy. I used to be a regular at underdogs, and they went through a massive legal wrangle due to some of the games they were hosting.
When that happened, they started pulling games and only making them available for download when the owners said it was ok to do so. They also have a great listing of many of the "golden age" games that were out in the '80s and '90s.
I get kind of nostalgic when I swing by there these days.

I'm familiar with Underdogs and they historically don't have any games available that the owning publisher or developer would object to being distributed. However, abandonware is somewhat of a grey area and some of these sites do offer games that should not be distributed for free. I would like a heads-up before links to these types of sites are posted to give me a chance to check it out.

Hey! See you guys have moved in already!! :):
Underdogs is a great site, they used to offer System Shock 2 on there but had to pull it because they didn't have permission. At least they have the class to not be some sleazy Warez site and respect the publisher's wishes.

Pop, you made it!!!
You're right in that respect. They make a pretty good attempt to act ethically so I don't mind recommending them. However, the last time I was on their site it had turned into pop-up ad purgatory.

Yeah, the pop-ups can be bad there. At least they got rid of the installer pop-ups recently. Just add Google tool bar or some other pop-up stopper and it is much better.
That site has become one of my favorite game sites recently. They have a lot of info on ancient games of my youth. Its amazing what you can find there, not just the games but the information, links, and whatnot. I found a never released space-sim UFO where you stumble into Area 52 and steal a UFO. I also found a lot of alternative games such as the fixed Battlecruiser3k, freeware text games, and indy games. It really makes game collecting fun!

BTW, for all your RPG maniacs. Try Betrayal at Krondor game. Its an oldie but a classic game. One of the best ones IMHO =] You can get it free at underdogs (Sierra themselves released this to the public for free when Betrayal at Antara came out)
If you're on Win2k/xp system, you'll need to add a line in your config.nt file in windows/system foolder:
emm=ram
Just put that on the bottom of the file and teh game should run normally.

Just use Mozilla Firefox. No pop-ups. :)
I really hate it when publishers stop some games being distributed for free but don't make them avliable legally. I can understand (obviously) if they are still selling, but if they are not surely making it avaliable means that at least the brand name is being passed around a bit.
