Hi all,
I am looking for a space dogfight game. I really liked games like Wing Commander, X-Wing vs. Tie-Figher or Star Lancer.
Now I am looking forward to something like this, but with a lot better graphics :-). Another thing of great importance is a multiplayer mode for LAN- and Internet games.
Any suggestions?
TIA, R!tman

Space dogfighting hit a peak with Freespace 2. It had everything - massive capital ships, great dogfights, and a great story.
Basically, nothing has been able to compare since then - although there really hasn't been that much since then.
There's a relatively recent XCom game, as well as Freelancer. These are all okay, but nothing special. There's also Yager and Echelon, which are more like normal flight sim dogfighters, but using futuristic planes.
Note: none of these are very new. Yager is the newest, but I haven't heard much good about it.

Homeworld (http://www.3dgamers.com/games/homeworld/) BTW - welcome aboard! :shades:

Homeworld is very good but it's not really a space dogfighting game, it's an RTS. The best someone could recommend is Freespace 2. I myself had a lot of fun with Freelancer but some people didn't like it much. X2: The Threat is pretty fun but the dogfighting aspect is not very well done, for the most part.

If you want a space dogfighting game the best you'll get are Freespace II and freelancer.
Freespace 2 is a game more in the genre like the games you already mentioned, where you fly mission after mission as a pilot in a military campaign, and it's probably the best game in its genre. It is already a few years old though, and the graphics are definitely not that good, when you compared it to starlancer for example.
Freelancer is made by the same people as starlancer, and is set a long time after starlancer. It plays more like the privateer or elite games, with a lot of dogfighting, but also much more freedom than those campaign based games. It has got among the best graphics in a space sime today and IMO some of the most intense dogfights in any spacesim. It uses a new sort of interface which is completely mouse driven, so no joystick, but the interface actually works like a charm once you get used to it. If you're looking for something fast-paced, with intense dogfights and great graphics I would recommend this one most.

I don't know if you've tried X-Wing Alliance. It's an older game (from 1999), but one of my favorites. I just reloaded it the other day. The graphics still seem to hold up nicely. You can also just set up a quick battle using all kinds of Star Wars ships.
I still wish they had made an expansion to this one!

Freespace 2 for sure. One of the best games ever.
Also, you should check out X2-the threat. The game has the best graphics for a space game right now and has a dynamic economy and a universe involved in a war against an alien invasion. Its not that much of a dogfight type game though. Its more of a space simulation but you should check it out anyways.

Thank you all for posting. I looked at the freespace 2 webpage and downloaded the trailer. Looks very good. I will try that. I hope I can still find it in the stores, or at ebay :-).

I really enjoyed Descent 3. A lot of it was indoors, but all of the zig-zagging made my head spin...indoors or out.

I don't know if D3 should be considered a dogfighting game, but it sure was fun :):

The descent games are good too - not really dogfight games, though.
