View Full Version : Favorite Games Ever?

I'm sure we did this on our old forums, but never on 3DG. Besides, we have some new members and some returning old ones. Use this thread to state which games are your favorites and, of course, why :):
My picks, in no particular order:
Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight
This is the game that really got me into shooters. The graphics were pretty good at the time, the gameplay had some really novel ideas and it was just plain fun. Its online component was also pretty strong and the game had a great community. While I'm not a Star Wars fan anymore, I still consider it one of my favorite games.
Unreal Tournament
I've had this one on my hard drive for a long time. It had great bots and good enough graphics, but also a fantastic multiplayer component and a very big map making/modding community. It also received more developer support than any other game of its time.
Deus Ex
In my opinion, the best FPS/RPG hybrid ever. It had a great plot, an engaging atmosphere, intriguing characters and very interesting gameplay. Its graphics were not top notch, but it didn't detract from the fun at all. It's a shame the sequel didn't live up to the first.
Baldur's Gate series
Very epic, deep and LONG games. I still think they are the best D&D games ever made. great NPC's, gameplay and quests, plus a pretty decent plot to boot. I strongly hesitated between this and PS:T, but in the end, I had more fun with the BG games.
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Another epic game that had amazing graphics for its time. I still think they look great today. It's also the most open-ended game I've ever played and it had a huge amount of quests and character combinations. It did have some gameplay flaws but its huge modding community largely corrected them. I'm kind of a fan of the Elder Scrolls universe and I enjoyed exploring it in this game.
Final Fantasy 6
While I'm not a big console fan it's still one of my favorite RPG's. It had great characters which were all interesting (except the secret ones), an awesome soundtrack, a story filled with plot twists and one of the greatest villains ever. The gameplay was also very addictive.
Well, that's it for mine :):

I'm too lazy to add praise to each but:
Fallout
Deus Ex
Team Fortress Classic
Wolfeinstein (must of put about 300 hours into this)
Mafia
Many others, but not to that scale.

Diablo II
The first RPG I ever played (one of the only too, because I found out I hate any non- Action RPG). I played battle.net 1500+ hours. I had 4 accounts and 1 mule account. The 4 accounts were scattered with lvl 70-90 characters including one of the best dueling sorcs on USEast (I only lost 1 time in about 2 months).
Star Wars Galaxies
My first MMO, and my only MMO (that I have liked enough to play past a beta/trial). I have played this as much as diablo II. I quit for a month but came back and like it just as much.
UT2004
Combined everything that was great in the first two. Added modes like onslaught made the game great and versatile. It added many people to the UT community.

The Baldur's Gate series, for obvious reasons. :): Allthough I had played the diablo games before, it's really BG2 that got me hooked on RPG's. BG2 + ToB is still the game I have spent the most amount of time playing by far. I must've finished it at least four times, and got through halfway at least a dozen times.
DF2: Jedi Knight, Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast and Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. These are still among my favorite and most played shooters thanks to the innovative design and great gameplay.
Deus Ex. Another obvious choice. :): Great plot, gameplay and atmosphere.
Sacrifice. A very underrated game. Tha graphics were amazing for it's time, the gameplay was a very unique twist on the RTS genre, and the overall design was brilliantly insane. I mean, who can say no to a game with the 'bovine intervention' spell.
Morrowind. This was for me the game I have anticipated the most, and I wasn't dissapointed with it one bit.

I assuming we are talking only about PC games. There are a few console games on my list, but I wont put them here.
In order:
1) StarCraft - the best PC game ever made, in my humble opinion
2) FreeSpace 2 - I just love this game. 'nuff said.
3) Unreal Tournament 2004 - All the unreal tournament games rock, and this one rocks the most.
4) Mechwarrior 2 - causing mass destruction in a huge robot set to a great soundtrack.
5) Doom - About six months ago, I came across a copy of this game, and I now understand why people revere it so much. Its almost the best PC game ever
There are a bunch more that I loved, but these stand out.

X-Com UFO defense - it's amazing the quality, variety, depth of play and length of game they put on 4 or 5 floppy disks.
Doom - I'll never forget when I finally made it to the final boss.
Hexen - A Doom (Doom 2?) engine game by Raven which featured some cool new things like leaves blowing in the wind.
glQuake - Another unforgettable moment. When I bought the original Voodoo video card and applied the gl (glide) patch to Quake. I witnessed first hand the future of gaming graphics.
Unreal - Amazing graphics in it's day and I had to replay it 2 years later when I had a machine that could run it properly. Along with the graphics I loved how each episode seemed to merge well with the previous. I actually had the feeling of progressing through another world instead of cut scenes and dropping me into another scenario after finishing a level.
Baldur's Gate 1 - I love all the Infinity engine rpg's, but BG1 was the only one I managed to finish.
Super Mario 2 - I actually like platform games. Super Mario 2 had one of the great end game cut scenes and was very rewarding after playing it for so long. Amazing what they put on that old 8 bit NES cartridge.
Deus Ex - It took me over a year to finish this game due to playing other games along side it. There must have been something good about it to keep my interest for an entire year.
Morrowind - I spent nearly six months (Friday night sessions) playing this game exclusively.
Battlefield 1942 - I thought the game sucked when I first played it. The multiplayer mode was difficult to get acquainted with and vehicles difficult to maneuver at times. But there was something that kept me playing. I still love the heck out of BF1942. Sometimes playing DC mod and sometimes playing classic BF1942.
There are lots more, but that would have to be the top list since they come to mind immediately.

Half life is my all time fave. It brought me into the FPS fold, and that never would have happened if it wasn't such a great game.
I also like:
PC
Starcraft
Warcraft 2
Baldur's Gate series
Planescape: Torment
NOLF 2
Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
Console
The entire Final Fantasy franchise. The only one I didn't like (and didn't even get close to finishing) was FF9. May fave is either X-2 or IV.
Star Wars: KotOR
Ratchet and Clank 1 and 2
Beyond Good & Evil
And many, many more. Those are the ones that jumped out at me.

Myst was the first game I ever played and it turned me onto gaming, so even though "hard core" gamers don't really like Myst or so I've been told, I like Myst. I think I have worn out my Master of Orion II disc because I've played it so often. It took me a long time to really learn how to play that game, that I played it over and over and over again. I also like Age of Empires I and II. My latest favorite is Syberia. I haven't had a chance to play Syberia II yet, but I'm sure that will be on my list as well.

My top 3 games of all time have to be;
Duke 3D
Warcraft 2
Red Alert
These 3 gams i played religously for a looong time. I played single player and modem games EVERY day.
Even still i load them up and play them every 6-12 months and when i go away i take them to play on my laptop.
These are probably the 3 games i played the most.. looking at the replay value of games since then, i can't believe how much replay value they had. They were definatly worth their price (unlike most of todays games).

Unreal
I love this game because its one of the first games I knew and loved. I played it about 7-8 years now i think :) and about 5 years playing it multiplayer. Because now the game has such a small community maybe about 70 players on in total at once, it has such a great feel and atmosphere.
Unreal Tournament
This game is fast and fun and just brilliant.
Thief
All of 'em, i totally love them, they have the greatest single player! I love it, i love wating untill someone turns their back then jumping out the shadow and hitting them on the head with my blackjack (club). or even putting our the lamps with my water arrow then taking everyone out with arrows :p Great game.
Guess that's about it :p
-EDIT- How could i forget doom!!
Doom
All of them! Doom, New Doom, Doom 2, blah blah i forget the titles. This is because they were the first 3dfps games I played and I acsolutely love 3dfps :) I remember playing it with my dad in the evening (i was about 6 ;p) before i went to bed, it was so scary having this big creature jump at you :p and start knawing you to bits rofl :p

Anyone else tried all the older FPS games with opengl?
You can play Duke3D, All the Dooms, Hexen, Heretic and others with opengl by just downloading a small file. (not sure where to get it as i got it off a magazine DVD but it shouldn't be to hard.) There are several different types of "updates" that have been made to each game.

Sim City 2000 - It was the first game that really got me into PC gaming.
Red Faction - Lookling back now it wasn't that great, but it was my first 3D shooter and my first online shooter.
Undying - Extremely underrated by sales, a great game with amazing atmosphere and excellent graphics for its time.
UT2004 - Current favorite. Lots to play and do, brought ragdoll physics to the forefront (UT2003 did at least). Excellent modding/mapping community.

Talking about played doom with better graphics has anyone played DoomsDay? It's a remade doom with smoother graphics. The change of gameplay is minimalized so it's still got that old doom feel, but you can enjoy the play more. Try it out, only small: www.doomsdayhq.com

Hey Earthbound was great! Probably the most original RPG I've ever played. It was hilarious too. I mean, what other game lets you eat hamburgers to restore hit points and fight hippies and "Annoying Old Party Men"?
I still have the rom file for my emulator. I should give it another run someday.

Have you tried the improved Anarchy Online and its EP - Shadowlands from Funcom or Dark Age of Camelot from Mythic Entertainment? A lot of people also seem to be enjoying the new City of Heroes MMORPG from NCsoft and there's been a great deal of interest in Blizzard's upcoming World of Warcraft which looks very cool.

Hmm, I don't know how I missed this topic...
Max Payne
Endless hours of sheer bullet time fun. Remember, Payne was the first game to successfully implement bullet time. It has since been copied endlessly, but the original is still the best. To top it off, it was the first game I've seen to use photorealistic textures, so the game looked absolutely great. And the story, while cheesy, gave a good incentive to keep playing till the end.
Knights of the Old Republic
I still haven't actually finished it, even though I've been playing it off and on for nearly a year. The whole premise - being a Jedi Knight of your own design, going all over the galaxy - is so cool to me. Even though it's a single-player game, and certainly not Star Wars: Galaxies, it always felt incredibly free and open-ended.
Rise of Nations
I admit it, I like it better than Starcraft. I love RoN. Everything about it is cool to me, especially since I modified the unit cap to be in the thousands. There is nothing quite like having a full army made up of several divisions each converging to one capital city, while you can at the same time see every single soldier.
And the favorite:
No One Lives Forever (1&2)
Colorful characters, interesting weapons, cool gadgets, a beautiful heroine, exotic (and sometimes familiar!) locales, an intriguing storyline, and wit to boot, No One Lives Forever is, to me, the perfect game. I've enjoyed every moment spent playing both of the two in the series. What they did was put style back into the FPS genre - there have been too many games, before and since, with repetative gameplay, boring environments, forgetable characters, cookie-cutter weapons, and dry voice acting. No One Lives Forever (the first one, especially) was a breath of fresh air for my favorite genre.
