Hi guys, glad to be a part of the forums. I realize this is a terribly broad question but I need help. There are a lot of games ou there and I don't want to waste my money. Can you guys give me your opinions of the best story-driven shooters that were made within the last year or so? I'd like to get a fairly recent game. Many thanks!

Two words for you: Half-Life 2. This is one of the best story-driven shooters you can get. I thouroughly enjoyed it. The graphics are top-notch the story is engaging, and the gameplay is very smooth with a couple of really fun twists and puzzles.
I would also recommend Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from butcher bay. I only played the demo, which was very good, but I heard a lot of people raving about the full game.

Max Payne, definitely. Half Life 2 has a story, but its really more of a mood game.

Both Max Payne games had probably the best story elements. Then I'd say Far Cry and HL2 fall next in line.

Another vote for both Max Payne games.

Besides the big name shooters HL2, farcry, max payne (all amazing) you might want to try hitman contracts or theif 3 for some stealthy shooting action. Also, project snowblind and area 51 are decent console ports that are still above average story driven shooters.
Edit: also you might like splinter cell chaos theory for stealth action if your computer is up for it.

The theif series is great. Also, I'd recommend Splinter Cell (although that isn't really a shooter).

I'd have to simply agree with the above posts. Personally I enjoyed Doom 3 also when I got over the "this all looks the same" thing and just played the game for what it is.
