Gamespot's site has the pre-release date of 6/1 still, but notes underneath it that ID hasn't yet issued a release date.

Looking over the screens again, they don't look any different from Far Cry or HL2, in fact they look very similiar to FC. Now that hardware has caught up to this technology, and games like Far Cry and Painkiller have been released already, not sure Doom iii will make the huge splash it had anticipated as far as the experience goes.

Funny how smaller companies are beating these big corporate houses to the punch and taking some of the wind out of their sails.

Of course I still hope it's a great action game but nothing will ever come close to the original DOOM series.

In fact I would've been MUCH more interested in this game had they basically just taken the original characters, enemies, maps and weapons and gave them a 2004 makeover....to at least give it some nostalgic flava.

Instead it just looks like another semi-generic, gory, action shoot-em-up fest in darkly lit corridors with silly looking monsters and pretty graphics. Maybe I'll be wrong...

Doom 3 has great shadows though. That isn't shown too well through screenshots.

If you see it actually in play, it is amazing. Through a movie not the leaked alpha of course.

*cough*

I'm hoping that Id recaptures the whole mood and pacing of the original landmark title. The graphics will of course be a hundred times better but it was the combination of level design, music, sound effects, enemies, weapons and well paced gameplay that kept me mesmerized for untold hours in Doom 1 & 2. That continued too, long after the newness / cool factor wore off.

But by now I suppose we have seen just about every variation on the sci-fi horror theme in shooters for SP and MP. So it's doubtful many people will be completely floored by any new game in the genre - at least as long as the same basic formula is used. That's why I was so taken by System Shock 2, Thief 1 & 2 and Deus Ex. They offered whole new elements to the gameplay along with amazingly immersive settings and better than average original stories. Prior to that, Half-Life added in-game cut scenes and The Wheel of Time added some very nice twists. Then NOLF took all the latest advancements and re-emphasized the story, characters, dialog, humor and intoduced some very clever new level types.

It will be interesting to see exactly which of these new things are included in Doom 3 and just how they effect the total experience. Then, we can all come here and compare it to the original game and to all the best FPS titles created for the PC in between.

Cheers, Terry

Doom 3 will be the scariest and most atmospheric game ever. That said, it wont be the same fast paced action that made the original different. I think a lot of people will be surprised by doom 3. You really got to expirience it all first hand to get the full effect of what ID is truing to create.

Yeah I guess I am referring to their hype vs. how people will actually view the game, which is to be expected I guess... And Terry summed it up well.

It's funny to think I played the original game on a 33mhz processor and 8MB's of system RAM with no video card on a 13" monitor.
