View Full Version : Well, it finally happened

My close to 5 year old, launch PS2 finally bit the bullet. It now won't read any disc period, in fact it gives me disc read errors when I don't even have a disk in the drive now  .

On the plus side, I get to buy one of those new, smaller PS2's now, heh. I debated getting a new one at all, but God of War is way too much fun to suddenly drop and never play again (or wait until the PS3), and I haven't even opened Xenosaga Episode II or Star Ocean 3 yet.

RIP good buddy.

Mine is stil chugging away, but I don't think I play it nearly so much as you did. RIP, PS2.

Sorry you've lost an old friend, Bruenor. But, look on the bright side, you have a real excuse to buy the latest systems!

I feel your pain, but I am envious, those new slim-lines are badass little units, I was amazed how small they really are.....

I hear the small ones are fragile and tend to overheat.

Man, the thing is freaking small! I knew that it was small, but I hadn't seen on until I opened up the box. I love it, very sleek, heh.

I did some research on the overheating thing, it looks like a lot of "hot air" (pun intended). For the most part, the hardcore users have little to no issues, my guess is its fanbois propoganda. The thing consumes half the power than the big fatty model, and the power supply is external (the big block connected to the plug). There's a lot of heat generation right there.

It does feel somewhat flimsy, but I'm not sure if that's mainly because the thing is just incredibly light. Whatever, I don't go throwing my consoles around the room for kicks anyway.

Anyway, love it.

I read the title of this post and my first thought was "gee, did his mom die or something?"

If it makes you feel any better, my XBox is starting to bite the bullet, and it is less then two years old. I think it is the harddrive because games keep freezing unless I delete the save games. The Microsoft XBox site says the freezing can be caused by corrupt save files, but this is happening over a multitude of games. Just lost my Fable, NBA 2k5 and NFL 2k5 saves. I am not pleased at all.

Is there anyway to swap out the drive? If so, you may want to try that.
Just a thought.

I know it can be done because that is how a lot of XBox hacking is done, but from what I have heard you are unable to use XBox Live afterwards because it scans the hardware to make sure it is legit. I googled and looked up some information, and it just does not seem to be a route I want to take. Since my XBox is out of warrenty, the MS XBox website says that charges could be $100 or more. Would be better to just buy a new XBox, something I am unwilling to do at the moment. It does make the XBox 360 picture a bit brighter, though I am still upset that a system with very moderate to low use is crapping out after just two years. Course, at least my XBox power cord has not burned down my house.

Is this the reason there's no HDD in the Xbox 360? Or is there I wonder?

I actually get slow-downs and some minor chugging once in a while when loading - no big deal but the slow-downs only occur during snowy games on ESPN NFL 2K5.

Hmm, I never had any slow down with NFL 2K5 and I put a lot of time in on that game. The 360 does come with a standard 20GB HD, it is the PS3 that does not come with one. The 360's HD is also removeable as MS showed off a seperate harddrive kit.

I wonder if MS will ever come out with a streamlined XBox. As of now, I could put my bulky and broken XBox behind a semi-truck resting on a hill to prevent it from rolling backwards.
