I must have seen a different movie than all these so-called critics. What they are all calling a "loud, pointless mess", was one of the most entertaining movies I've seen in a long time. Granted, a critic's review is only worth the paper it's written on, but the way they are tearing into this movie is a bit much, even for them. Hopefully the final numbers will be good enough to turn a profit so Steve Sommers and cast can flip the bird to all the nay-sayers.

I want to sit here and write down all the reasons the critics are wrong, but I got errands to run. However I will say that Van Helsing is a great, fun monster movie. I thought the story arc to bring all these characters together was well concieved. I thought the acting was great as well. What do most critics/sites have against Kate? I think she plays her parts perfectly. Anyway, the special effects and stunts are also fantastic. You have to see the wolfman transform, it's the best take on the transformation I've ever seen. Most of the critics complain of the over the top wire-work and cheesy cgi. What?!? Ok, in a movie with monsters that by nature fly, and heros that are more than just heros, what do you expect?

Overall this is a great monster movie. It's got loads of action and special effects, good characters, great monsters, and lots of humor. All of this makes for a very enjoyable movie going experience. I truly hope Sommers continues to make movies his way. So far he's done alright by me.

On a side note, I bet that Catwomen will recieve rave reviews. Seeing how Halley Berry is such a great actress and all. Talk about flavor of the month. I've seen inanimate object act better than her. Sheeesh.

Critics are tough on Beckinsale because she used to do only "serious" pictures. Now she's decided she might want to make some money acting and she makes a lot of "fluff" like Underworld, Pearl Harbor, and Van Helsing. The types of movies that critics traditionally rail against. Also, if I remember correctly, her dad was some big deal director or actor in England.

.

Her father was noted British TV and film actor Richard Beckinsale who died of a heart attack just short of his 32nd birthday in 1979, when Kate was barely six years old. He was also actress Samantha Beckinsale's dad.

According to her bio at Thespiannet.com, Kate graduated from Oxford and also attended Godolphin and Latymer School in London, twice winning Young Writers awards for her fiction and poetry.

I hope their new movie career is short-lived.

Well, just got back from seeing it...and it was "ok". It reminded me alot of LXG, which I also thought was just ok too. I could rip the movie on a number of things, but I think all of them would be "nit-picky" things, and not really a big deal. It is exactly what it tries to be, and that's a big shoot'em up monster flick.

Personally, I think Hellboy was better, but I don't feel that I wasted my money either.

Compared to this time last year it didn't do all that great. Remember, the first big movie of the summer is supposed to be huge...X2 opened to something like 80 million last year, and before that was spiderman with 114.
