View Full Version : Downloading large update files

This concerns Sierra's Half-Life/Counter-Strike. Probably similar concerns with other game programs. The update file is 121 Mb in size.. for those who have a DSL or cable modem, not much of a problem. But for those who have only a dial-up service, it is an 8-hour or longer wait!! Why can't the offer be made, for a purchaseable CD with the update files on it, in lieu of the download feature?

I have four active systems, all registered OS versions, and each has a unique role as far as programming goes. The "top dawg" is my latest build.. I've been doing computer repairs/building for more than 10 years.

My latest "toy":
Windows 2000 Pro, SP4, and Windows 98SE, dual-boot.
Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz 800 FSB w/ HT,
1 x 512 Mb DDR 400 Corsair memory
Asus/nVidia FX 5200 AGP 8x 128 Mb
Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM 80 Gb
Chaintech CT-S848P mobo
450 watt ATX mid/full tower
SB Live! 5.1 Digital PCI card, with surround speakers
120 Gb S-ATA to be added.
16x DVD/CD reader, 32x/24x/16x DVD/CD burner
NEC MultiSync LCD 1700V monitor
Plus KVM switching for multiple systems.

Probably because gamers tend to have high-speed connection nowadays. Have you recently looked at demo sizes? They tend to go around 500mb in size now =]

There are sites such as FileFront that will load up a CD for you of demos, patches, whatever is on their site and send it to you for a few bucks.

I suggest you take a look at that!

You have a computer that good and can't get a cable/DSL connection?

Microsoft offers free updates on CDs sent to your house. What really gets me is when you just bought a game on the first or second day and it already has a patch. Not a small patch either, like a 100-200 meg patch.

I'm not complaining about the file size.. it is that the local telephone service cannot provide a DSL connection, and I do not have CATV! SATV is my preferred video medium. I got the "free" SP2 for Win XP from MS, no problem. Could possibly d/l the file at the local library, but there are restrictions as to file size.. I'm not d/l'ing a move or other video.. it is a program update. Will have to contact the FileFront site, to see what can be done.
Thanks for the suggestions.
When you are at the "end of the line" for service features, you have to forego the "nicities" other people enjoy. The roads in the area are not so great, either!

Ever since I got super speed Cable, my connections been soooooooo nice. 10 megs in 3-5 second. I'm paying for it though $50. You can't believe how nicely the games run, and how less agro the updates are to get.
