Well, they started sending my subscription to Game Developer and I got my first issue a few days ago. So I was reading it and they have a rather long "behind the scenes" article on EverQuest. Damn, talk about nuts. They actually have a NASA-like building for command center where they have computers and LCD screens on walls everywhere monitoring their servers and such =] They also have a stand-by IT/programmer guy ready in case anything happens with the servers (like a bad patch crashes and stuff) 24/7 (yes, one main guy). At home he is forced to sleep next to his telephone just in case an emergency raises. They also have specific rules set like no employee can come in later then 10am to work otherwise they get canned.

A few more rules regarding the expansions. They actually made it so they release 2 new expansions each year (no wonder there is so many) and each exp has to include certain feature listing. Also a month before release of an exp, they start brainstorming on new one =P

Here are some nice stats:

Number of developers on EverQuest: 50

Number of developers on EverQuest 2 and Everquest Online Adventures (PS2): 160

Number of servers running Everquest: 47

Number of PCs running those servers: 1,500

That be alot of stuff
