I've noticed that, after lvl 10, items decay at a rate of 5 pts per death, in addition to decaying over item with normal wear and tear (ie fighting). At what point do items become inviable in combat before they need to be repaired, and how fast do items decay during battle?
My wife and I were grouped up a few minutes ago, trying to take out Delfias Trappers in Westfall. I had forgotten to get my gear repaired before heading out. My sword was at 45/55 durability. We died three times during the course of about 15 minutes, by which time my sword's durability had dropped to 30/55.
That seems like an obsurdly fast rate to me.

thats nothing at one point they had 90% durability hit when you died =P

Items with better durablility don't degrade as fast. That's another reason to always get the best items you can find for your level.

Yes, but death is always 10% of the item.
Repairs aren't too bad. I am rather careless in PvE and at level 51 I still only spend a few gold a day repairing, while I easily made 25+ gold in that time.

Does an item's max durability also dictate its overall effectiveness? For example, an item with 100/100 is going to be of significantly better quality than one with... say... 20/20?

Not really. A given item always equally effective until it reaches zero durability. Then it stops working altogether until it gets repaired. You mostly see higher numbers (100/100 as compared to 20/20) when comparing higher level, and moreso, larger items. A cloth robe will not have the high number like a steel breastplate will. The same applies to daggers compared to a two-handed sword. You lose 10% durability when you die. 18/20 or 90/100, it's still 10%. It may seem like more if you have been fighting and losing durability in that manner in addition to the deaths.
My level 35 Hunter can fight all day and only have to spend a couple of silver on repairs. Combined with a death, it's still no more than I could get from just a few minutes of adventuring. At least we don't lose experience on top of it. In EQ2, I had a level 16 Warrior and one death would mean a couple of hours of grinding to regain the lost EXP. Or the "EXP debt" as they call it.
