Not a permanent ban but at least 4 more years of accessing the web without special taxes.

Cheers, Terry

The U.S. Senate on Thursday voted to renew a four-year ban on taxes on Internet connections such as
DSL and cable modems instead of a competing plan that would have made a moratorium permanent.

By a 93-3 vote, the Senate adopted a compromise proposal favored by state governments, which argued
that a perpetual ban would deprive municipalities of vital tax revenue and amount to an unfair

Outrageous that such a tax is even being seriously considered.

Open communication between humans shouldn't be taxed. It's enough that we're charged tax by our ISPs and on virtually every piece of system hardware & software that we need to access the 'net.

It's strange, but if such a general tax were instituted, and some sort of email stamp tax were instituted, we'd probably see people buying and setting up systems that connect directly to one another via dialup phones, thereby bypassing the Internet all together.

Years ago we called this things a BBS. I can foresee a possibility where ignorant politicians butcher the Internet and turn it into a place where only wealthy Americans can access all of it. Of course, most of the other countries will still offer free/unfettered access for all of their citizens. It'll have to be America that first screws over for it's own people.
