Is television dead for video gamers? For many, choosing between playing a couple hours of "Splinter Cell" vs. watching a reality show about B-grade beauty queens swallowing bugs is a no-brainer.

They just hit the nail on the head.

Video games present a different challenge, said Hibberd. "Watching people play video games is as exciting as watching someone read."
Exactly.
Now, give me a 30-min show where a couple of guys demonstrate some really good tips & tricks for playing in some of the more recent/popular multiplayer games (not including MMOGs). Like how to get onto seemingly inaccessible rooftops and such.
And not just one game per show. That'd suck for anyone who doesn't own/play that game. Should dedicate 8 minutes to each of three different games (allowing for 6 min of total commercial time).
Once per week they could even do a 30-min show on different fan-made mods for various games from various genres. Who made them, where to get them, what they offer, what's good & bad about them, etc.
When you have people suffering from too much TV-tunnel vision, all they see are how to use trite old programming formulas, with a new subject, and think of it as a totally new & revolutionary show.
But they'd be better off spending time on gaming message boards and seeing what the gamers are REALLY interested in watching.
Here's a clue...
If I'm going to stop playing a game and turn on the TV for 30 or 60 minutes at a time to watch a show(s) about games & gaming, then I'm going to want to be provided information that might otherwise take longer than 30 to 60 minutes to obtain from surfing the net and various gaming sites/forums. now THAT would be worth it.
Aside from that, I wouldn't even be interested in watching ladder matches between FPS clans. Because ultimately I'd still be doing the same thing as before...... sitting there watching someone else play a game and have all the fun. And that leads to...

There's no way they could lure me back. I watch maybe 2-4 hours of TV a week these days, but I play upwards of 25-30 hours of games. I bet they'd love to have my eyes back on the TV, but it's way too boring for my tastes. bleh.

The only television I ever watch any more is one hour of 24 on Tuesday, and The Screen avers and Call for Help every other day. 24 is about the only show on television that is as fast-paced and exciting as a video game.

.
These days, if I'm having trouble sleeping, I just kick back on the sofa, flip on almost any TV channel and am dozing off in no time. Golf and tennis are particularly effective because one has a nice, lazy metronome rhythm and the other has whispered tones and birds chirping. But with the sound turned down a bit, practically anything on the tube will quickly lull me to sleep. Even a NASCAR or Indy Car race has a nice, regular cadence to it and people talking endlessly about the same old things always makes me yawn anyway. Now, if I could just get rid of that screaming idiot who wants to sell me a mattress cheap cheap cheap, I might never wake up again.
Cheers, Terry

TV is pretty much dead to me for sure. I haven't watched much since the advent of reality TV shows, mind-numbing crap IMO. I hate to think of advertisers getting the idea that if they can't lure us back to TV, bring tv to the games. Will ads and product placement start becoming prevalent in my games?.....(shudders)

I wouldnt mind watching tourney matches between some top clans. Things can get rather exctiting =P Good commentators are the key. A few weeks ago I remember listening to an internet radio broadcast of a match between two of the most top clans fighting for #1 spot in the Desert Combat clan match =]

All I watch on television currently are reruns of Band of Brothers, some British comedies on BBC if there's anything good, and music on the local MTV equivalent. (which actually plays music , and even good music to boot. )
And even then, that's at most a few hours per week, while I probably spend the same amount per day behind the computer. It would probably take a serious overhaul of the television networks to bring me back to the television, and that isn't likely to happen because there are too many people that actually watch all that reality show rubbish, and zap away as soon as something intelligent comes on. O well, I've got my computer if I want interesting entertainment.

No TV for me either - literally other than a football or college basketball game during their respective seasons, or a DVD I've bought...some times a half hour cable comedy show is ok (fond of Curb Your Enthusiasm on HBO).
I just shrug when it comes to watching network TV, I feel sorry for people, honestly, that still have to do that for entertainment every night...it's something my 60+ year old parents still do or I used to do back in the 70's as a kid.
get with the times folks! :)

I'd watch TV if I could get an aerial for my AiW... Combine the best of both worlds. :)
I think that not only has tv quality more or less collapsed (particularly on crap like MTV; BBC, ITV and C4 are actually quite respectable a lot of the time) our attention spans have also lapsed lol...
I'm bored.

The only show I seriously watch anymore is Mr. Net (French Canadian show about games and everything related to computers). They are really up to date and talk a lot about new products and current events in the game/computer industry. Seeing how the show is in Montreal, they often conduct interviews with the Ubi Soft and EA studios there, as well as with representatives from various game companies. They also have a big one week E3 special every year. Definitely a good show.
I will occasionally watch some random shows like That 70's Show, Simpons, King of the Hill and Family Guy re-runs but not much else.
