View Full Version : Doom 3 Expansion Preview (If anyone cares...)

IGN has a preview up for Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil, the expansion to Doom 3. I can't say I'm terribly excited about it, given how uninspiring Doom 3 felt, especially toward the end game. Yes, it had some great graphics and lighting, and some truly tense moments, but the "scare-factor" quickly wears off once you learn to expect when and from where things will jump at you. I was just dissapointed how the gameplay still didn't really offer anything that much more innovative than the original Doom: enter room, kill monsters, find locked door, kill monsters, find key, kill monsters, unlock door, kill monsters, wash, rinse, repeat.

I mean I had fun playing it, but it could have been done much, much better. I thought the inclusion of non-player characters would have been a redeeming aspect. But really, the NPCs didn't really offer anything other than some voices that shedded a little bit of light on the story/current situation. I was expecting more interaction... NPCs that followed you for a bit and helped you fight, NPCs that I had to defend from swarms of zombies while they accessed a computer terminal, NPCs that I would stumble across later in the game, that actually had character development and weren't killed off 3 seconds after I meet them. [/rant]

Anyway, one of the things that stood out to me in the preview was this little bit:

"We introduce the ionized plasma levitator designed by the UAC to move around heavy objects. It's also called the Grabber for short. You take control of this tool which ends up being a worthwhile weapon as well. You can pick up anything barrel size or smaller and hurl them around. Think exploding barrels, shovels, rocks, and even projectiles from the enemy. Imp fireballs can be grabbed and hurled back as well as the smaller creatures like the trite and cherub."

Gee, what a novel idea! I haven't heard of such a creative weapon design in a game before.

Seems like your post was more of a rip on Doom 3 than a post actually telling us about the expansion....

In another article I read (Gamespy maybe?), id basically said they had the idea for "The Grabber" for a while, and almost put it in the original game, but it obviously didn't make the cut.

I liked Doom 3 so much that I'm giving it away for free when I sell my Radeon 9800 Pro on eBay.

I tried repeatedly, but I just couldn't bring myself to finishing the game. It was a little scary for the first 30 minutes, but that quickly gave way to insurmountable boredom. The boxy looking outlines of the monsters definitely reminded me of Doom 2, not of anything modern. Graphics were good, but with the lighting so bad, it was all a waste.

In the end, this game offered absolutely nothing new, just like this expansion, from the previews I've read.

That it was. I was offering my feelings about the original game to point out that unless the expansion takes a more interesting direction, I'm not all that interested in it. Sorry if my rant wasn't what you expected but this is a forum where opinions are meant to be expressed. If you want a more unbiased preview, that's what the previews from the major PC gaming sites are for. I have no obligation to remain neutral in my attitude toward any particular game title in this environment.

I meant to post a link to the preview article but forgot to as I was in a rush as I made the post; my fault. Sorry. Here it is:

That will tell you plenty about the expansion.

D3 would have been soooo cool if it had been one big hell sequence.

I already know everything about the expansion, I figured you were going to express your opinions on it...since that was what the topic title was saying. At least have the title fit the topic at hand.

But enough of that, I am interested in getting my hands on this new artifact inthe game. :)

:doa: While there was much anticipation for Doom3, I was really looking forward to playing Doom3. I found it to be a complete flop of a game. Like others on this forum have said, it is too similair to the same old thing. Lucious graphics and lighting does not make up a great game. This new expansion looks like another way for ID to make up for their loss of revenues from Doom3. The story line looks too similair to the original Doom3. If they had made an easy MOD tool and the pc gaming community imbraced it, then Doom3 would had been a much better game.

For now, my Doom3 sits on the shelf collecting dust while Halflife2 consumes all of my housecurrent. No comparision between the two.

I hope ID listens to their valuable customers and comments and produces a better game.

This is not a rant of Doom3, just my unbiased opinion. Take it or leave it.

Seems that ppl have forgotten that D3 was never intended to be anything other than the way D00M was first envisioned, so DUH to all those who are fussing about ' its the same thing, nothing new, spray & pray'. And heck gotta give some credit for actually fleshing-out the story line that was handed to us in a small text file back in the early 90's. Now gotta admit lotta triggers are a bit obvious, and that gives us a chance to 'lock & load' before they can be activated. But then show me any FPS that isn't guilty of that. And I have to admit, I love the 'Martian Buddy' concept, I cant think of any other title that has webbys for interaction with the offline game. I'm not saying it hasn't been done before, just this was my first encounter (***GASP*** a gamer admits that he isn't the Uber-player who knows all & sees all before all others ) with that concept. And lets not forget the scalability of the game.
I dont have a 'screamer' of a cr8, just an AMD 1.2 with a Nvidia Ti 4200, And my framerates are just as sweet as they are playing AVPgold. Now others may not like the 'look' of the monsters etc... well it may be your cr8. My next cr8 will have a MoBo that has PCI express and an SLI connector to run dual GeForce 6800 Ultras. I bet that will erase the 'facets' on the in-game skins.
But I am sure that all the D3 bashers can make a better product, they just cant get the financial backing

hey bob could you help me getting thru delta lab #4. I can't seem to get by the two monsters that spawn right in front of your character when you get control of him back. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
