It starts here (link will take you to number 10):

I personally don't really agree with their number one choice, but can see why I they picked it. And I TOTALLY disagree with where WoW placed on the list, but I can't be sure if I'm objective enough based on my love for the game.

anyway, enjoy the list.

Err... Even I can't say that I agreed with their overall pick. If I had to pick between HL2 and Halo 2, I would still give HL2 a very slight edge too (again, I am not a fan of HL in general but whatever).

As for WoW, you know I could live with it being HL2 and Halo 2 because IMO those are all the cream of the crop. Having played both GTA:SA and MGS 3, I do have a problem with these games being rated so high. GTA:SA is making a living off name alone now as far as I'm concerned. Don't get me wrong, it's still a great game but it also STILL has all of the problems and quirks that existed since GTA 3 and other than timeline has brought absolutely nothing new to the table. At least Halo 2 brought great MP, and HL2 brought a great new graphics engine, integrated with a great physics engine. GTA has done nothing besides change the setting and the voice-overs.

MGS, well I hated the series since 2, so I am a little biased there.

Big time console list though, looks like only 2 PC games made the cut. As a multi-platform gamer, I must say that the PC should have been a little better represented than it was.

That list was ok but the number one choice was off.

HL2 mops the floor with halo 2 in every way except built in multiplayer. Also, what about doom 3 and farcry. Farcry should be top 5 easy.

Retribution.

hello
i dont think half life two should be second imo, yes it was good but the steam system lets it down badly but thats what i think
i still stand by that ROME:total war should be no1 :D

Far Cry didn't even make the top 10 ?! :wtf:

What a total farce. :face4:

Far-Cry defiantly deserved to get on the Top-ten.

But I'd agree with their choice of Halo 2. For me, multiplayer weighs heavier than single player. What does HL2 offer in the MP department? CS (meh) and deathmatch (which is actually really fun, but not as fun as original HL deathmatch). And I also happen to like Halo 2's single player.

After finishing Half-Life 2 and playing Rome: Total War all day, I have to agree with you (but not because of Steam). I was actually slightly losing interest in HL2 by the end. I thought the first chapters were the best. I'd even go as far as saying that I enjoyed the old NOLF more than HL2. I know I said HL2 was my PC game of the year in that other thread, but I hadn't played anything else. It's still one of the best FPS' I've played though.

I think R:TW offers a more complete package, and has a crapload more replay value.

I'll have to go with WoW as a shoe-in for GOTY after playing it. Other than maybe Far Cry nothing else really comes close as far as the games I've played this year.

To me it looks as though Gamespy is heavily console-friendly. I find it amazing that Doom 3 didn't even make the top 10. Sure Doom 3 didn't have the most revolutionary single player campaing. Not by a long shot. But it does have an engine that will spawn games for PC and probably Xbox for the next 5 years or more. In the least, Doom 3 provided a polished, traditional, creepy first person experience with some great modern computer effects.

Another fairly large suprise is the MIA Far Cry. Wow. To me Gamespy's GOTY list is :lame:

Thanks for that well-thought out and clearly supported post. Very nice.

Sub, you make a very good point. I agree Gamespy is very console heavy. And you also make some very good points about Doom 3. I passed on the experience because it simply didn't sound like my kind of game.

But you're right: the technology involved was very good, and the engine will play a big factor in a lot of games that could wind up being legendary, and that's always a good thing. For the technological merits it brought to the table, I agree that it deserved at least a mention.

Those ratings are ok. It was interesting to see that there was no far cry though. I loved that game and the graphics were absolutlely awesome. The fan-base for the game is huge also, youd think that would be enough for a top ten spot...

I dont know about halo being number 1. This was my favorite "dual-wielding" was listed as one of the new innovations. Did these guys ever play goldeneye? Thats like 10 years old, gamespy is going down the tube for sure.
