In an official statement at IDF (Intel Developers Forum) in Taipei, Taiwan, Intel said it will update its Itanium 2 processors to make the chips more productive and cost-effective for its enterprise clients. The official statement was made on Tuesday.

Intel’s previously released versions of Itanium 2 processors were released last year, 2003. The 1.4 GHz version released in Q3 of last year featured 1.5MB on-board L2 cache.

The newer 1.4 GHz Itanium 2 chip will carry 3MB L3 cache and was available starting yesterday, right after Intel’s official announcement. The 1.6 GHz model will also carry 3MB L3 cache and will be available for consumers sometime around May.

Intel already has a strong support from IBM, Dell, and Fujitsu to carry systems based on the updated Itanium 2 processors. The cost on the newer server systems will be reduced by as much as 30% than the current Itanium 2 processors.

As stated in our previous reports, Intel is really focusing its resources on its Itanium line processors due to the inefficiencies of the Itanium based systems. Currently the company’s enterprise consumers are demanding the Xeon chips due to higher productivity and cost efficiency.

Previous Itanium chips did horrible in any 32-bit operations, I wonder if anything is different about these when dealing with that mattter?
