Just finished Freedom Fighters and thought I would share my thoughts on it. I picked it up for a bargain price and I am glad I did. It is not a long game. It’s not Call of Duty short but if I had paid the original full price I might have felt a little ripped off.
What I Liked - Interesting premise. Solid and stable game. If there is a patch out for it, I didn’t use it or need it. Game has few controls and is easy to pick up quickly. Game play is closer to a FPS/console type game than an RPG game so the third person perspective gives it a unique feel on the computer. Console players are probably more used to this. Missions were challenging on higher levels but not frustrating. You can recruit people to help during the course of the game. Usually more than one way to get through a mission. You can take the guns blazing, head on approach or there is usually a more stealthy way to get to your objectives. Missions are inter-related. Success in one area can help you in another.
What Bothered Me - Stable but a few graphical anomalies. Guns hanging in mid-air, enemies able to walk through objects. That kind of stuff. Graphics are not all that impressive. Environment is very static. Very few things you can interact with. Very limited on weapons you can carry. You can carry three different types of explosives but limited to only one rifle type weapon and one sidearm. You can’t even ditch the sidearm for another rifle type. Missions can build on one another but you have to discover this mostly by trial and error. Cannot save anytime. You have to be at certain geographical points. You can recruit people to help but your control over them is limited. You can tell them to defend an area, attack, or follow you. That’s it. No telling them who to attack or where to go. And when you tell them to follow you that is literally what they do. By the end of the game you can have up to 8 other freedom fighters and you look like the Freedom Fighters thundering herd when moving around. I found this very annoying as they were always getting in my line of fire.
Despite the longer negative list, I really enjoyed this game. I don’t know about the great reviews it was given on some sites but all in all well worth checking out, specially for the current price.
