Decided to give KOTOR a second chance and started playing again last night. I am enjoying it more but can't find the documentation that came with it. I'm still on the first planet and tried to buy the 50 credit droid. It would not follow me past the door to the droid shop after I paid for it. I got my money back saying it was a piece of junk. The shop girl did not seem surprised at this. Am I supposed to be able to buy this droid at this time? How do I get it ( or anyone else ) to join my party?

That particular Droid won't join your party - mainly because it blows up as soon as you try and leave the shop...it's a scripted sequence. Don't sweat it and move on.
Carth should already be in your party...whenever new characters join you, you will be prompted to choose 2.
If you ever want to change characters just go back to the hideout and when you try to leave the hideout the game will prompt you to pick 2 party members. Party members show up onscreen as the portraits in the lower lefthand corner.
Go ahead and keep playing through the storyline and things will open up for you and happen naturally.

Yes, the starting planet is a bit long, and can get confusing/frustrating at times, but by the time you leave that planet, you will have "cut your teeth" on several a bad guy, including some impressive one's to boot. You will be more confident in your ability to kick the next guy's butt right out the door.
Just remember..
Save often.
Pazzak is your friend.
The workbench is cool.

Anyone else think Calo Nord wears his underwear on his head? I mean, just look at him...
He was a funny guy.

A droid would have been nice. Luke Skywalker had one.

Patience young grashopper. :p:
Don't worry, there are plenty of NPC's that can join your party, and some of them are droids. Pretty cool droids even.

Calo Nord reminds me of Dennis Hopper. And yes, droids are cool.
