View Full Version : Explain your Username...

Emjayex
April 26th, 2004, 10:31 am
What does it mean? Why did you chose it? Is it the same name you use on all forums??

My reasons for asking is that this is probably the first international forum I have frequented for any length of time (over 2 days now!). Most of my other forums are all UK based with UK members only. Now, here, some of these names are really bizarre to me and very unusual.

My name is a play on my real initials. My name is Michael John Cross ... M J Cross becomes Emjayex.

Lou Cypher
April 26th, 2004, 10:43 am
I got my user name from a character in the movie "Angel Heart (http://www.uln.com/cgi-bin/vlink/012236120483IE.html?ptitle=Angel-Heart-DVD)". I use this name everyware on the web including MP games. As for the meaning of it, well I think you can figure it out.

O'C
April 26th, 2004, 10:48 am
That's a cool nick Emjayex.

Mine is a real life nickname. It's the first two letters of my last name. I used to use my full last name, then I got lazy.

Lou likes to make people work to figure his name (and he's right it's not hard), but I'll give a hint. Mash his first and last name together and say it out loud.

Bruenor
April 26th, 2004, 10:53 am
That's actually pretty clever EJX. My name is just a character name I ripped from one of my favorite books. What can I say, I lack imagination.

Feuerwizard
April 26th, 2004, 11:13 am
Hi Michael! My username is Feuerwizard as u can see. Feuer is fire in german, and wizard well u know what it is. I use it because I like magic stuff, and I added the word feuer because I speak german too.

I think I´ll create another username combining the 4 languages that I speak. (well only 3, cuz I´m learning french).

My old username was Cykario, and I had it for no reason, but it has something to do with a word in spanish.

Mara
April 26th, 2004, 11:19 am
Mine is from one of my cats. Her name is Mara. I like the name and decided to use it on the boards instead of my real name which I used to use. I use it on all the forums I have registered except where it has already been taken. Then I use MaraToo.

RHooks
April 26th, 2004, 11:26 am
I cleverly took the first initial of my first name and combined it with my entire last name so as to obfuscate my true identity ( kind of like the whole Superman puts on a pair of glasses and no one can tell it's him thing). I have been known to use R_Hooks when I really want to be incognito. My goody goody alter ego uses one other secret name on another forum.

SupaTroopa
April 26th, 2004, 11:45 am
Mine is from those SupaKupaTroopas (the turtles) from the original NES Super Mario Bros. series...if that wasn't already obvious.

The NES is what really got me into home gaming, in particular Mario Bros., when I was in H.S.

Emjayex
April 26th, 2004, 11:55 am
Heh! Thought you might have been an Abba fan with a name like that SupaTroopa

Shaolin K
April 26th, 2004, 12:21 pm
My name is pretty simple, actually. The first Black Belt I earned was in Shaolin Kempo. I still practice and teach that art where I now have a 2nd degree Black Belt, working on my 3rd. Also, I teach and train in the art of Shaolin Kung Fu (Pai Lum Tao), so that's why it's Shaolin. The "K" just came from Kempo. Also, at the time when I started using this moniker I was still at the University where our mascot was a Knight. So you can take your pick what the "K" means :D:

NotSoFast
April 26th, 2004, 01:17 pm
I am a member of a sportbike community located at www.rocketmadness.com. All the other guys had the newest, most powerful motorcycles and mine was only a 40 horsepower 500cc bike. We often met for bike nights and other events in person. So I picked NotSoFast as a way to introduce myself in person. Other guys names were SpeedFreak, AdrenalinJunkie, etc. I was able to look them in the eye and say "Nice to meet you, I'm NotSoFast". :D:

Nyghtfall
April 26th, 2004, 02:59 pm
Mine came from a bit of a fluke. Up until 1994, I'd frequented local computer bulletin boards, using names based on popular culture (Information Society - my favorite new wave band at the time; Steven Sagall - my favorite actor; The Dream Master - a play on a sub-title for a Nightmare on Elm Street sequel, created to reflect my new ability to control my dreams).

The Net had only recently been made available to the public, and computer stores were offering a product for newbies titled "Internet In A Box". It came with everything needed to complete a dial-up connection to an ISP, including a copy of my very first browser, Mosaic.

When the ISP's registration form asked for a nick name to use online, I decided do something creative, and forge the first unique name I'd ever used. I wanted it to best reflect my love for "things that go bump in the night", the Goth subculture, and nighttime in general. So, I came up with Nightfall. Unfortunately, it was already taken. I liked the name to much to come up with anything else, so I got even more creative and replaced the "i' with a "y".

I've used Nyghtfall ever since, and it still best describes me.

:)

Chylde Roland
April 26th, 2004, 03:27 pm
Mine is based on a Robert Browning poem (http://www.bluejo.demon.co.uk/poetry/poems/rol.htm).

Stephen King was heavily influenced by this poem, and many other forms of media (including the Seven Samurai) whilst writing his magnum opus: The Dark Tower. One of the main characters is Roland, a gunslinger. My avatar pic is actually the cover art from the most recent printing of The Gunslinger: The Dark Tower Volume I.

DanTheManPR
April 26th, 2004, 03:34 pm
Well its DanTheManPR, because some people call me Dan the man. And it has PR at the end because I live in Puerto Rico. And also because Dantheman was already taken at hotmail.

My other alias - the one I use in online games - is KrazieKat. This comes from the name of a really weird comic called Krazy Kat. "KrazieKat" is a misspelled version of that.

Sometimes I use Flak Monkey, because the Unreal announcer keeps calling me that...

First 3 letters of my last name then the first 2 of my first, how about that :p

Mr. Natural
April 26th, 2004, 04:06 pm
Obviously I'm a fan of R. Crumb.

Quantum Ninja
April 26th, 2004, 04:45 pm
Mine comes from my interest in physics, hence the "Quantum", and my interest of martial arts, hence the "Ninja." Last year, my college buddies frequently referred to me as a ninja because of my martial arts background (although my practice has been put off for my studies since I've been to college), so I incorporated that into my online nickname. I figured a ninja who was able to utilize the effects of quantum mechanics at the macroscopic scale would be the deadliest force ever, and so this name stuck.

OldsterHolster
April 26th, 2004, 05:10 pm
I was "Old Guy" from the GameSpot days til last week, because, well, I'm old; and I thought it would be the best way for other forum members to recognize me. Computers, and games, were new to me, then; but now that I've had a few years of FPS experience, I decided to embellish my image, slightly. I do like shooting those bad guys. Heh, heh. I don't go anywhere else or participate in other forums where I would need a screen name. Edward.

How I got it: Diablo 2, I was making a Paladin and needed a name, I decided to use holy frost and he looked like he was walking on clouds hence Cloudwalker. Replaced the a with a 4 because people have stolen my name in so many games.

How I could have got it: Cloud (ff7) + skywalker (Star Wars) = Cloudwalker?

Pfft, that RPG is like, soooo overrated.

;)

Mine is the name of a character I made up for an online town (freeform RPG, I guess you could call it) I was part of. I was the town's premiere barkeep, and Kalbrecht was my son, helping out, eager to see all the adventurers passing through and sneaking drinks from under the bar.

I just realised how Oedipal this all sounds. Yuck.

You forgot to download the patches! Very important in a game like that!

Nova
April 26th, 2004, 06:44 pm
I wish Real Life had implemented the quicksave/quickload feature. It would make the game a lot easier.

I've been using Nova as my main nickname online since 1999. I switched sometimes but always came back to Nova. I chose it because I like astronomy and a nova is an interesting and probably nice looking phenomenon.

Mines my morrowind character, or was. Maxed him out eventually, but not being able to download the Giants mod or any large mod because of dialup there wasn't any challenge left.

Shardos

I got Wulfgar from the same place :D:

but Shardos is from a dragonlance book, I believe the tales series

Jagndeke
April 26th, 2004, 08:06 pm
Jagndeke comes from my Junior hockey days. I used to be what could be considered a rushing defenceman. I never liked to "stay at home" in my own zone so I used to make a lot of rushes up the ice. One day after an end to end rush where I deked my way through the opposing team and potted a goal, someone piped up with the nickname jag-n-deke because of the way I jagged and deaked my way up the ice. When I started posting on forums, I just shortened it to Jagndeke.

Night, as in shadow.

Captain
April 26th, 2004, 09:46 pm
I first started out using Captain Planet :), I didn't really like the show I just liked the name. Then I went to CaptainBackfire(Different variations, CaptnBackfire, CaptnBckfire, etc...) which I got from the lyrics of a song(which I no longer like, lol) I still like the name though, so I've just shortened it to Captain, which is what I use on all the new forums I register at.

On online games, mainly muds, I use the nickname Antrus, which I just pulled out of my head one night.

My nickname "Torsion" is a word that means "to be twisted". Ill leave that to you all to see if that describes me. :) Its also a nice symetrical word.

Tom Servo
April 27th, 2004, 08:11 am
Welp, my name is Tom Servo and I got it from the awesome show Mystery Science Theatre 3000.

Well, I guess you al know where 'Mike Rotch' came from huh?

Gaim Mastr
April 27th, 2004, 11:09 am
Way back when I was a pre-teen software pirate, even before I ran my own BBS, I used "AC/DC". Mostly because it was my favorite rock group, and partly because of the whole alternating current / direct current electrical thing.

Lots of maturing (well, a little at least), lots more ethical and legal responsibility, and lots of years later the world wide web (www) came into being. First discussion group I'd joined was about computer games. Well, at the time the vast majority of people in the group had screen names that were reflecting an over-bloated sense of their gaming prowess.

So in order to fit in with the rest of 'em I came up with "Gaim Mastr". This was long before the Gaim multi-protocol IM software (http://gaim.sourceforge.net/) came into being. Hmmm.... if only I'd trademarked that name earlier.

Anyways....
I kept the screen name for use on more and more discussion groups, forums, etc. But then people started using screen names that didn't reflect how they thought that they kicked the most butt in games. So I figured I'd try a few new ones myself. Unfortunately, my registration on, and recognition within, so many places was dependent on my sticking with Gaim Mastr.

Not really a big deal, I thought.

Fast forward a few more years and you find me liking that old moniker less and less. Whereas once it had fit right into the general settings of game discussion groups, it now stands out and looks unreasonably arrogant and egotistical. Now people see that old screen name and probably think, "this guy has a major over-bloated sense of self-importance."

I've actually been wanting to change my screen name to something else for several years now. But so many people through the years recognize it and the person using it that I've held off.

Once again I participate in a discussion around screen names, and once again I'm extremely tempted to change mine to something less........ oh, what's the word........... haughty.

I was thinking of something along the lines of simply "Gaimur" or "Gaimr".

What do you guys & gals think ??

Impresario
April 27th, 2004, 11:28 am
I picked Impresario b/c I'm a fan of the Marx brother’s comedies "A night at the opera etc. Also as a dad of two little boys life sometimes resembles the wackiness of a Marx brothers film.

Why not just use your real first name with a simple initial or some totally anonymous substitution for your surname?

In real life, my friends and acquaintances aren't named after hobbies, super heroes or mythological creatures. Just good old Bob, Carl, Gina, Ed, April, George, etc. So why not be youself online - up to the point that you still feel comfortable with revealing personal information?

Cheers, Terry
