I'm also excited about the release of the Half-Life 2 SDK. Plus, Valve has announced a map-making contest. Looks like all the mods and the custom maps will be pouring out soon!

Half-Life 2: Deathmatch is out and free to download to anyone who purchased at least the Bronze version.
It comes with only 2 maps but the general impression is that these maps are awesome with alot of interactivity. Valve also announced a map-making contest: $5,000 to the grand prize winner and $3,000 to the two follow ups.
It's nice of Valve to let the community on the action and the quick release of HL2:DM =]

So what about the people who just bought the retail version of HL2 from stores? Is that considered the bronze version?
It's bad enough HL1: Source wasn't included in that, nor the Freeman Chronicles or whatever that is. I still paid $58 for the thing.
anyone know?

cool thanks, not that it's a huge deal but figure something like that should be free...never know with Valve.

Even more reason for me to get this game.
I am still in the situation where I have to wait until X-Mas though.
Oh well, at least by then, it will be patched up and modded to high heaven for me! :D:

Supa troopa, 2 things.
1) Why do you catre so much about? Codename Gordon? I've played it, it was crappy.
2) You do get it for free, hell someone can make a steam account with no other games and get it for free.
And yes the retail counts as Bronze

Nope.

You can't upgrade either unless you got the ATI pakage dealy. Kinda sucks but I think they will implement it soon.

So has anyone played it yet? Or is it still not working?

My son was on it so it is working. He said it was "cool". It should appeal to 12 year olds everywhere. He didn't mention any lag problems but he typically doesn't pay attention to those type of issues.

I don't really care that much, but considering you pay about $58 after taxes for the retail game, and the next step up in their steam package, I believe, is $60, I just don't see why retail buyers wouldn't get the same options as everyone else in that price range.
I have no real interest in DM or any other online shooter for that matter - but if something's silly or stupid or unfair, I have no problem stating so.
As for Codename Gordon - it's not playable on my steam interface (not highlighted under my games) nor is HL1: source.
Just seems stupid, regardless of how good the extra games are or not.

You can think of it this way (regarding the price differential between what you bought and what is offered on Steam), it was Valve's little way of "encouraging" you to buy the game via their Steam distribution model instead of retail.

Yep and Valve can shove it. You don't get access to DM either if you bought the retail box now that I've checked out my steam account.
Basically they're trying to cut out the middle man and make more money for themselves...all fine and good but when you punish consumers you've crossed the line. They also may think this helps to eliminate piracy. But again I'm not a hacker or a software pirate and if I pay $55 retail for the game - I should have an option to pay $5 more on Steam for the rest. I don't see that anywhere.
I cannot be the only one who feels this way or was easily mislead by their package descriptions vs. retail boxed game.
Ultimately it doesn't matter much in my life, I can't stand Valve nor do I like Counterstrike and will probably just not pay for or buy anymore of their products...not that they'd care.

TECHNICALLY, you bought HL2, no more, no less. I believe you can play HL2 and they gave you CS: source for free too, so you ARE getting more than you paid for. They never garunteed you HL: source or HL2DM.
For any other game, if they gave you more than the game you would be happy, but because it's valve and they're giving other people free stuff you seem to think it's yours?

Not not really, I said I felt mislead by the vauge retail vs. steam descriptions, and I AM paying $56 for the game - who's asking for free stuff? I said I'd probably $5 more to get what the silver package folks do - which seems fair - versus paying another $60 for HL1 and DM. Cmon that's ridiculous.
Why would you screw the retail purchasers of your product by not including a simple DM mode for free like every other shooter out there has? CS is not HL2, not even close, DM uses the same character models, weapons etc.., and is based on HL2 - CS is not - so I don't consider CS any sort of bonus.
Sorry the whole thing is just freakin' stupid. Valve has always got on my nerves, they make a fine game, but outside of that...ugh.

Supa are you saying you can't play DM? I bought retail too and I was able to download it without any problems. Write now it's highlighted under "my games" but I haven't gotten a chance to test it, so I'm not sure if it will work.

MC... if it's located under My Games it means you have that in your package. If its grayed out, steam will download it. If its white, its ready to play. If something is located under Available, it means you can purchase it.
