^yep, let it grow out. How did you get a silver nitrate stain on your toenail?

If you are desperate, put iodine on it (will turn it brown) and get photographic fixer (sodium thiosulfate) at 5 - 10% strength from a photgraphic supply store to remove the iodine. It MAY take out the stain. Check the label on the fixer and make sure it is sodium thiosulfate and not made from something else. It is just that photographic fixer is an easily obtainable source of sodium thiosulfate, but I am not sure if there aren't fixers made from a different chemical as well.

Put som on a q-tip and try it. Wash the area well afterwards though. Sodium thiosulfate is also used as a drug to counter some of the side effects of some cancer drugs, and is injected directly into the blood stream. So limited exposure to the dermis should be safe. But wash it off afterwards.

Warning: The use of sodium thiosulfate for this purpose is at your own risk. I take no responsibility for any injury which this may cause. (If your toe falls off...Don't sue me) :):

actually it'll go away after a while. at least it does on skin. Teacher told me that it stained permanently, so I made a cool little design on the back of my hand and it was gone in 2 days lol

The reason it didn't stain your skin permanently is that we are constantly replacing the top layer of skin with new cells. After 2 days, you weren't looking at the same skin that got stained. Toenails are a different matter.

How did you get a silver nitrate stain on your toenail?
About ten months ago, I kicked a softball, and my toenail came off. So, its been regrowing for awhile now, and at got really ingrown about a month ago. I stuck some cotton under the edges to keep it from getting stained, and the doctor gave me these little matchstick-like things with silver nitrate on the ends to swab it with. He says the silver nitrate kills bacteria (it got pretty infected) and it cauterizes wounds. So I did that, and it turned my toe all black. The stained skin already pealed off, but the toenail is still jet black. I'd rather it not be jet black for another nine months.

Go to a tattoo parlor and have them tattoo it the "normal" color. With all the biker related activities we have down here in Daytona Beach, fingernail and toenail tattoos are all the big thing, especially for the women, since its cheap and doesn't hurt. Of course they all get designs or pictures or something, but I'll bet they can match your other toenail color.

Another suggestion would be to paint all your other toenails black. Heh, heh. Good luck. Edward.

.

The quickest way to remove silver nitrate from a toenail is to dip it in an ammonia compound, expose it to heat and then hop around a bit until it, well... you'll see.

All kidding aside, here's a link to some more information about the removal process if you're interested:

I figured there must have been an ingrown toenail or some kind of infection involved there. So, did you try anything yet? any luck?

I was preparing to move this post to the hardware forum because I thought it had to do with removing heatsink compound.
