According to the following linked article at ZDnet's AnchorDesk, there are several very good reasons to leave your PC powered-up (probably in sleep mode) most if not all the time when you are not actively using it.

In addition to his reasons. Heating then cooling something puts a lot of stress on it. When you are doing this over and over, parts are eventually going to wear. Many people think programs like SETI, F@H, and other distributed computing projects are "hurting" their computer by making it work 100% all the time. In reality they do not, in fact they help your computer by keeping everything at a stable temperature all the time.
On the other hand, if you cannot sleep because your computer is in your bedroom and is too loud, go ahead and turn it off.
As you can see in my sig, I leave mine on 24x7.

I don't leave it on because the power goes out all the time.

That tip about using a rain gutter to hold wires is pretty good.

Power is expensive and contaminates. Besides, my computer is in my room and it's summer now, I don't want a heater on all the time.

I've always left mine on 24/7
For three reasons:
1. I'm lazy
2. What Donjo said
3. I'm lazy

I turn on my computer, go to the bathroom and then come back and it's on. I would keep it on all the time but I have to sleep and the thing has a lot of noise, it's like a jet engine in your room.

I tun mine on in the morning, and of at night. Sometimes I leave it on all night, but not always as the noise bothers me. Yep, it's in my room.

I usually turn it on in the mornings before I make my breakfast, and turn it off in the evening, though sometimes I leave it running.

Mine is always on all the time. it's in the living room so it doesn't bother me at all.

I turn mine on in the morning, right after I wake up, then go to the bathroom, shower, shave, etc. so when I'm done it's up and running. I always turn it off at night since it's in my bedroom and is quite loud.
