From IGN:

In March, we reported on some speculation that Paramount might be planning for the next few Star Trek films to be prequels. That now seems to be the case, as Rick Berman has told British magazine Dreamwatch that a prequel is already in the works.

"I am involved in the very early stages of what could be the next Star Trek movie," says Berman. "It's something I will be producing with two other producers." If previous rumors prove correct, those two producers could be Jordan Kerner (Mighty Ducks) and fellow Enterprise collaborator Brannon Braga. More details from Dreamwatch are up at Trekweb.

This isn't the first time a prequel film has been proposed. 15 years ago, Harve Bennett, producer of Treks II through V, wanted to make a Star Trek precursor set at Starfleet Academy. That time, Paramount dismissed the idea, opting to make The Undiscovered Country instead.

Dark Horizons has an interesting clue that could relate to the new project. They report that a new project at Paramount goes by the title "Star Fleet Command," and it's currently seeking writers.

* Take it for what its worth..

err... Let the franchise have a break, like 5 years or so. Then come back with a new series or movie, with someone other than Berman.

I can't see this working - a prequel? Featuring who? How could you get people to play younger versions of themselves? Or find some other capable actor to do them justice?

Or will they introduce new characters and choose to screw it all up.

Pfeh.

This just feels like grasping and straws to me. I could see how the idea might seem like a great one if Enterprise was doing great. But I thought that its renewal was in question?

The impetus for any movie used to be from a good idea and I think that Trek has run out of them.

Personally, I would love to see a Deep Space Nine movie, myself, even a TV movie, but I don't think that's ever going to happen. Those are characters that I miss a lot, especially after watching the recent Spike TV DS9 marathon.

If this does actually take off, I'd be very surprised if it were to make any profit.

They already tried a prequel on TV and screwed it up royally. I am almost certain that Berman is the anti-christ.
