From Amazon:

Singer/pianist Diana Krall breaks new ground interpreting modern standards by Tom Waits, Mose Allison, and Joni Mitchell, as well as compositions by her and her new husband, Elvis Costello. Krall's piano-jazz cred comes through loudly and clearly on her Count Basie-styled version of Bonnie Raitt's "Love Me Like a Man." But it's the collaborations with her spouse that unearth untapped emotional nuances of her velvet voice; many are reminiscent of Bill Evans's moody, impressionistic pieces. The title track, "Narrow Daylight," "Abandoned Masquerade," and "I'm Coming Through" all deal with love and loss. "Departure Bay," a picturesque ode to her hometown of Nanaimo, B.C., proves that this is the start of something big, and that two heads--and hearts--are better than one.

I grew up on many of those old tunes and saw Mose Allison in a small, subterranean jazz club established by Charlie Byrd in Annapolis, Maryland as an extension of Blues Alley and Byrdland in Washington, DC. He was great in an intimate, accoustically rich setting like that. Also saw the legendary Teddy Wilson, Earl "Fatha" Hines and other jazz greats there - along with The Charlie Byrd Trio and many surprise guests over a 3-year period. Even saw Sara Vaughan before she died. What a treat that was!

They even booked a few non-jazz acts from time to time like The Country Gentlemen (a magnificently talented blue grass and hardcore country band with impeccable 5-part vocal harmonies and the world champion bluegrass fiddler) as well as Carolyn Hester (forerunner to Joan Baez), The Edgar Winters Group and Bill Schustik ~ The American Troubador, who is still a very dear friend and sailing buddy after all these years.

FYI: There is a terrific web site dedicated to all the jazz greats at:

Cheers, Terry
