Does Steam have your saved games? As much as I've talked bad about Fallout-New Vegas, I was up to about level 24, and it was getting more interesting, but I didn't back up my saved games before my computer died, yesterday. I was expecting to play for another week or so before hooking up my new computer, so I was waiting until then before backing up my saves.
I'm not going to start over. The game just isn't that great, but I would finish it if I could continue from where I left off. I'm almost positive that they don't have your saves, but I thought I'd ask, anyway. Edward.

It depends - the service is called Steam Cloud (I think) but it's not a requirement for every game sold on there. I haven't checked the other thread - did the old drive die or will the computer/Windows not boot? You could always put the old drive in the new system and recover the save files pretty easily.

Steam cloud is fantastic, but it is not on all games. I am not sure about New Vegas, but I know Fallout 3 was done through Windows Live, even though you could buy it through Steam. If that is the case again, I seriously doubt cloud support would have been supported.

I remember one time I couldn't start the game because I got a message saying something about Steam syncing with the cloud, or something like that. Maybe I'll install the game on the new computer just to see. Like I said, the game isn't super great, but I would like to finish it if I could take up where I left off. I'll let you know what happens in a few days. Edward.

Sorry Edward, the saves for New Vegas aren't on the Steam cloud. I had a bit of a scare with this game too at one point, and like you I was definitely not about to start over if I'd lost it. Are you able to pull files off of your drive as a slave in your new PC? The files should be in Documents>My Games>Fallout New Vegas>Saves. If you grab those files and reinstall the game through Steam on your new computer, you should be able to put them back into the same folder and play again as you were on your old PC.
I'm pretty sure Valve disabled Steam Cloud for this game because of all the known problems with save file corruptions.

I guess NV is pretty bad. Edward, have you played plain Fallout 3?

Yeah, Mitch, I just found that out. I was just sitting here, so I installed the game from Steam instead of putting the disc in, and then, when I started to play, it said, "no saved games found."
I would be very hesitant about plugging in that old hard drive into my new machine, knowing that it's defective hardware. I suppose I could try slaving it into this computer, and then putting the saves on a flash drive if it works. I'll think about it.
No, Rob, the game isn't bad. It's simply more of Fallout 3, almost exactly. I'm prejudiced because Just Cause 2 was so great, (to me, anyway) that anything less pales in comparison. I liked Fallout 3, and I think I'm up to around sixty hours in New Vegas, and it was getting better all the time. Just Cause 2 was all action, which I liked, and New Vegas is all about the rpg elements and dealing with details. It's just very slow-paced compared to Just Cause 2, but it can still be entertaining for hours and hours at a time. If you're liking Fallout 3, you will like New Vegas, too. Edward.

I wouldn't worry about plugging the old drive in, I've never had any trouble. Worst I've seen is Windows hang up a bit trying to access a very bad drive (think lots of clicking and thrashing) but no crash came of it.

You could use a cheat just to get where you were and turn it off.

I wanted to get some pictures off an old hard drive from an old computer, so I bought an external enclosure quite some time, ago. It didn't work, because the old hard drive was an IDE interface instead of SATA, so I just stored the enclosure in it's box. I just remembered it, so, tomorrow, I'm going to dig it out and use it to connect the old drive to this computer via USB and see if I can get my saves. I'll let you know if it works. Edward.
