I remember this being a huge topic back when it was released so I almost have fond memories of a game I never played. But I also remember people talking about how buggy it was.

Question is: what was wrong? is it fixed? is this game worth playing now?

The graphics look good enough that I wouldn't hate the game for it, just curious about the rest of the game.

Most of the criticism I heard about the game was how buggy it was. The game is "fixed" now but only if you use a community fixpack/mod called Circle of Eight (http://www.co8.org/forum/showthread.php?t=6695) that covers everything from bug fixes and balancing to restoring content or outright (optionally) adding new content.

I could never will myself past the heavy D&D trappings--Co8 or not. But from people who are into it, I've often heard them regard the combat system in this game to be among the best (if not the best) for turn-based CRPGs. It's also almost all combat except for the town at the beginning.

If turn-based D&D RPGing strikes your fancy then you should definitely check it out these days. Just don't forget the Co8.
