After playing the demo, I can't help but want to buy this game and review it as average. Its by no means a bad game, but this game is IMO a perfect example for what a name and hype can do. I recently played the Shadow Ops demo and kinda enjoyed that more than the Doom3 demo. Outside of the graphics and atmosphere, which were great, there wasn't much there I thought. I'm guessing that the mod community with go to town on Doom, so there is that to look forward to (an Alien Doom 3 or a Resident Evil mod would be quite nice I think)...

I kinda feel the same way. I bought the game and played for about 5 hours, and then kept playing and I feel like I keep doing the same thing over and over again. Very repetitive. I don't know if I'm going to be able to make it to 20 hours or how ever long it is.

Most overrated game of the year quite easily IMO - not a bad game by any means, but nothing special, I actually liked Serious Sam and Painkiller just as much....but I didn't have to pay $55 for those.
I've just had it with "old school shooters" and find myself turning to RPG's and sports games more and more....unless a truly great shooter like Far Cry comes out.

Yeah I still feel like an idiot paying 55 bucks for it

As in you can not discuss it, or as in you do not condone or encourage to it?

I quote our forum policies (http://forums.gamers.org/showthread.php?t=4):
3 } There is NO support for software piracy at 3D Gamers. No links or discussions about copying games, unless it's specifically stated and provable that the games are freeware. General hacking or game modifications are allowed topics, as long as the posts aren't intended to promote or disseminate piracy, or violate any applicable laws. If any of the Moderators believe a post to be written with the intent to instruct or ask for instructions regarding the pirating of software, or making copies of non-freeware games, they will delete it. Information for No-CD cracks is also banned from our forums.
In other words: posts asking for pirated copies, or where someone tells he pirated a game will be deleted. Posts discussing piracy and it's effects on the gaming industry for example are allowed, but we'll keep a close eye on them.

I played the game all the way through to the end and it was a good experience. Definitely a game worth playing and beating. It was pretty good, the graphics and the atmosphere were outstanding. The story was just ok I guess. You cant go very far with a story about opening a gateway to hell i guess.

I share SupaTroopa's feelings, closely. If Doom II hadn't been such a major event in most gamer's lives, and if we wouldn't have had to put up with the hype, BS, and especially the delays for Doom 3; then I think it would have seemed more interesting, pretty, and scary, but still not special. I'll have to admit that it was a little bit of a disappointment. Normally, I like to play all my games at least twice; but I doubt that I'll fool with Doom 3 a second time.
Having said that, I sometimes wonder if the fact that I went through three hurricanes and a near miss while playing Doom 3 has affected my judgement. Maybe I will replay it, someday, but I doubt my opinion of the game, in general, will change.
While I'm not ready to abandon the shooters that I love to play, I also share SupaTroopa's wishes for something more. Far Cry was wonderful, and if somebody would make another shooter like that, with little Half-Life 2 magic and some rpg elements like the original Deus Ex, they would have a lot of us shooters singing their praise and shouting hallelujah.
I'm going to start The Chronicles of Riddick, next week, and it's supposed to have some mixed-genre elements; so I'll see how that goes. Bottom line is, I guess I still enjoy playing them all, even the bad ones. Gives me something to bitch about, you know; and, more importantly, makes it easy to spot and enjoy excellence when it does show up. Edward.

I feel Doom 3 was a wonderful game, and one of the best games of the year (Call of Duty: UO :p: ), and I still feel it was a disappointment, but not much of one. I love suspenseful games, and Doom 3 was one of the most suspenseful ones I have ever played. Sure it helps when you are playing at 2 in the morning when your house is in total darkness and you have some nice surround sound to go with it.
Overall, my 5th favorite game. :):

I enjoyed much of Doom 3, but I was left wanting a bit more. I felt like it relied too much on darkness and funhouse trickery. Yes, I was scared and it was very creepy, but it didn't hold my interest the way that other games have.
The complaints that I had with the game still stay with me and prevent me from loading it up and playing it again. I still think that the choice to have a weapon or a flashlight instead of both took away more than it added.
And I still think that whoever decided to default the console to CTRL (which also fires your weapon) should be hit with a flashlight. Let's see... I can't see, so I'll manually adjust the gamma. *BLAM!* OK... I've just wasted precious ammo AND alerted the enemy to my presence. Niiiice.
