I've had this game for a long time, loaded it up and set my options then never got into it. Was kinda hardcore in Guildwars for about 2 years, then WoW for almost 2 years now.

Well I'm taking a much needed break from WoW. Replayed CoD2 and GTA:SA and beat them.

Loaded up SC:DA and giving that another try(since I learned how to pass the game stopping bug on a certain level), and I'm gonna load up ENCLAVE, EliteForce2, RTCW and once I beat KOTOR 1 I'm actually gonna finish Vampire:M/R......

Think for now I'll only play KOTOR and SC:DA.

Keeps crashing on me, couple minutes into the game each time I try to play.

Although I did have the sound acceleration set to OFF on my soundcard cause GTA:SA has issue's with it being on.

Maybe that could be it. I know Riddick had the same issue. I'll turn it back on and try tomorrow, too tired to mess with it now.

Is this part of the Star Wars: Best of PC pack? That's where my copy of KoTOR came from, and I had a lot of crashing issues with it. Unfortunately, I don't remember what I did to help it, apart from vowing to just play it on the Xbox next time...

Older Bioware games such as KoTOR and KoTOR 2 have a lot of issues with dual core processors. When you boot into the game and are on the options screen, Ctrl-Tab out. Then hit ctrl-alt-delete to bring up the Task Manager. Find KoTOR in th Processes, not applications. Right click on it and hit Set Affinity. Uncheck processor 1, leaving only processor 0. Hit ok and go back into your game. You should be fine from there. And as always, make sure you have the newest patch. After the patches and removing the second core, KoTOR, the game should be rock solid. I didn't have a single crash after that, though, I still recommend saving every so often, just in case. KoTOR 2 on the other hand is and will always be a buggy mess, though it is still worth playing as well.

I know, pain in the ass, but it should fix your problem. If not, post, and we will see about getting you up and running. KOTOR 1 is just too good of a game to pass up.

Hmm, I think I am going to bring KOTOR with me on vacation.

Isn't there a patch for KOTOR on Lucasarts (http://www.lucasarts.com/support/update/KotOR.html)?

Yes, the patches never really fixed the dual core issue. Still definitely upgrade to the latest patch, and if it clears up the problem, that would definitely get rid of the affinity pain.

I bought KotOR for my father so he could play it on his laptop. Damn thing won't run. Says his system isn't up to snuff, yet it exceeds all the minimum specs. Won't even attempt to run. I'm not happy about it.

I should just buy him a used Xbox and lend him my copy.

Hey Rob -

Does that Ctrl-Tab out / Ctrl-Alt-Delete / Task Manager / Processes sequence work the same way with Windows Vista?

Cheers, Terry

Haven't tried it on Vista yet and the computer I will be using on vacation is XP Pro,, same as I was using before. Have you tried KoTOR or KoTOR 2 on Vista?

It's the original 4cd game, bought it when it hit the $29 range. Fully patched and everything.

I'll try the dual core affinity thing. I remember doing that for some other games...... just been so long since I had to do that, forgot to try it....forgot all about it really :p:

I gotta get ready for work so I'll mess with it tonite. Rob, I gotta do that every time I load the game dont I? Set it to proc. 0 and uncheck proc 1 ????

I was able to install and load the original KOTOR on Vista, but it kept crashing on my dual-core system and I was wondering if the same trick might work. However, I've had no luck doing the old cntl-alt-del thing with Vista.

BTW, I played the game several times on XP and never had any crashes or other technical problems.

Also, I've read that KOTOR 2 is pretty much a lost cause with Vista.

Cheers, Terry

In vista there's just one extra step. When you right click on the running game click "perform administrative tasks". Then highlight the program in the running processes, right click and you'll have the set afinity option.
Did you try running the game in compatibility mode?

Thanks Mr. N and yes, I tried running it in compatibility mode.

Still a no go. The game keeps crashing on me even when I set the proc affinity.

Oh well, I guess I just wasted money on it awhile ago. Not like it's the first time I've had that happen.

Sorry Shoboy, I wish I had another solution for you. You do not by any chance have an XBox do you?

Weird. I played a couple of hours into KOTOR a few months ago with my Core 2 Duo + 8800GTS and don't remember having any crashes--nor having to set affinity. Didn't know it was so finicky but then again it is a port... and getting up there in years.

Did you try disabling SLI?

A little snooping around their forums makes it seem like subsequent driver releases have left the game behind. Apart from having to revert to older versions though, I did find one more recent post (http://swforums.bioware.com/viewpost.html?topic=383347&post=6252120&forum=80) that seemed to give at least some people success:

I hope this helps you guys. I was having this problems and the way I fix it was by going to the Nvidia control panel, advance settings, manage 3d settings and programs settings.
There I added swkotor.exe Looking at the settings, on conformant texture clamp, I selected "USE OPENGL SPECIFICATION" and since doing this I have not had a random crash in several hours of playing. I hope this helps someone
I have a:

2 GB G-skill 1066
Biostar TP43D2-A7 6.x
EVGA 8800GT running 181.2 drivers
Windows XP SP3

ROB: Nope on the xbox. I've had most all the consoles but I've stopped playing them, sold em all.

Contagious Rage: I didn't even think about SLI. I dumped the game last nite but I still have my saves. Aint nothing to reload it and try turning SLI off, and doing that USE OPENGL SPECIFICATION too.

I'm laid off this week so I got plenty of time to mess with it :joker:

Both KotOR games are backward compatible with Xbox 360, so there's always that option. You need one with a hard drive so you can d/l the emulation patch automatically on game boot up.

My wife had this problem when playing it also....I did manage to fix it, but I can't remember for the life of me what I did .
