I just bought this on 360, but since the game is probably more popular on PC I decided to post in this section to see what you other folks thought of the game. I sunk about an hour into it last night, and I have to say I'm enjoying it. The pacing is decidedly slower than most other shooters, and the whole open world feel of driving everywhere is taking some getting used to, but it's a nice change of pace. It's almost like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. without the bugs or GTA without the city, if that makes sense.
I have some questions:
Are there hidden areas to explore?
Do your buddies really factor in to the combat experience, or are they just mission givers?
What do you think of the diamond hunt and outpost side content?
I've heard some people term it half action game and half sim. Do you agree?
If you had to score it on a 10-point scale, what would you give it (with 10 being the highest)?

I thought the game was great! It is somewhat slow-paced, and there is a lot of traveling around, but I thoroughly enjoyed it; and it was really nice to have a game last sixty hours.
There's not too much in the way of "secret" areas to explore, except for the diamond cases, but there is a lot of choice in how you move from one place to another. You can often go off-road in the vehicles, and travel on the water is usually an option.
Your buddies can help you out of jams and save your life if you get into a firefight and almost die. Otherwise, they are just little side missions with different little rewards, sometimes.
The diamond cases are mostly just a little diversion. You never get rich on them, and, towards the end of the game, I ignored most of them. Some are quite difficult to get to, so it is an additional challenge if you try to find all or most of them, and I did enjoy trying to figure out the way to find them once they were detected.
I consider the game to be a pretty basic shooter with some rpg elements thrown in to make the game last longer. The story is convoluted and really doesn't make a lot of sense, but it provides a good framework for a variety of fights, and you basically have to kill everybody. Heh, heh. There's really not a lot of choices to make that change the game.
A lot of folks got bored, but I'd give the game an eight, or maybe a little higher. While game-changing choices are absent, there are a lot of choices in weapons, vehicles, and tactics, and, when I found myself getting bored with the constant checkpoint battles and road warrior attacks, I just tried something new. For instance, I learned that I could dodge the armored Jeeps coming straight at me, and sometime they would roll over and blow up as they tried to turn around to chase me. Heh, heh. Saved a lot of ammo. Running over the bad guys at the checkpoints became a favorite sport for me, also.
I think I posted around eighty screen shots and gave my final impressions and review in the last two SHOW&TELL threads, if you want to check out more of my thoughts. Enjoy the game. It's pretty damned good in my opinion. Edward.

I really enjoyed the game as well, and got around 50 hours out of it.
I felt that I gave a good effort trying to find all the diamond cases, and when I finished the game, there ended up being quite a few left that I didnt find.
I think its one of the few games you can purchase for the full price and feel you got your money's worth from it.

I have played about 7 hours of the game, and I most likely will not be playing any more. FarCry2 was the biggest flop of 2008 for me.
The story is rubbish and goes no were, the acting is also brutal. Wepons were ok, but I want a sniper rifle and an assault rifle, not one or the other! The biggist issue with combat is though that your foes can take 10 rounds to the boday with out keeling over! Despite the fact they are not wearing armor! That said, the fire is great and can often be used to good effect combat. It is my favorite part of the game.
The biggest issue I have with the game is that it could have been amazing! A huge and beautiful world and then destroyed it by not putting in any immersion! The game in effect is a zombie shooter. Think of it; your enemies aimlessly shamble round untill they see you and then they do all in their power to kill you, heck even a head shot is needed to bring them down!:p:
I love sand box games, I have played Morrwind, Oblivion, Stalker and Fallout3. These games were for the most part believable open worlds. Npcs did their own thing, you often saw them battling with other npc. You could belive that you were just one person in a huge world that lived and died by its self. In FC2 your the center of the universe, a black hole in fact, sucking all the hot lead in air towards you as you face an army of respawning zombie snipers!

Played a few more hours. Here's the obligatory laundry list.
Like
Environments
Sandbox approach
Graphics
Physics
Lighting
FIRE!!1!
Hate
How enemies spawn out of thin air
How enemies return to checkpoints two minutes after you clear them out
That you can only have one active quest
Taking a new quest deletes the old one
There is no character progression, just unlocking new guns
There isn't much side content other than finding crap and taking out caravans
If you find a fort and clear it, but don't have the quest active where the "boss" is inside, you don't get squat for all that work
On the consoles, you can only save at safe houses (PC is save anywhere). WTF?
The entire game is about killing people, but I have no idea what differentiates the factions from each other
It's begging for some RPG elements, but there aren't any
Conversations are linear and there are no choices other than accept or ignore
Every time you pick up a new objective, you have to drive a friggin' hour and kill 40 guys in stupid nuisance fights to get there...AND KILL MORE OF THE SAME GUYS.
I like it, but wish Ubisoft would come out with some DLC to add some more interesting things to do that aren't killing missions. Give me a freakin' camera and let me take pictures of the animals! Let me drive some folks around! Why does everyone in Africa want to kill me! ARGH!

Haha, everyone wants a peice of you in Africa. Dont know why, considering you have malaria the whole time. Those nuisance gunfights were a really annoying part of the game for me. There was always one sucker left hiding in the bushes, owning me with a shotgun. I liked the aspect of the diamond cases, it gave the game a little diversity as opposed to simply driving, killing, driving, fixing your car, killing....
I also liked the golden AK-47s scattered around the map. I found one by referring to a YouTube video, and they look pretty cool.
FC2 is decent, it looks pretty and runs smoothly. I just wish there was more to do. I cant play it for more than an hour or so - despite the free roam aspect of the game, its actually incredibly linear considering you HAVE to accept a mission to make the game remotely interesting.
Edit: I just ran down a zebra. LOL

It was a little long winded at times. I ran out of malaria pills and had to go all the way to the other side of the map. I still enjoyed it. But not without save anywhere.
Yeah Ace those Zebra are attracted to jeeps.
