View Full Version : What is everyone playing these days?

Quite a few of us have a Now Playing in our sigs, but what is the one game everyone is playing right now?
Now that Winter Break is finally upon us, I will be restarting Fallout 3. I made it to Megaton the first time playing, but I had to get back to some geology papers and lost track of the game. And then I built a new computer for myself, so it has been awhile.
I still need to finish Mass Effect, which I should be able to do before school starts back up.
Non video game wise, I am starting a new campaign in D&D. It is a nice break from the TV and perfect time to be with friends.

As much as I hate to admit it, I gave up on PC gaming about a year and a half ago. The main reason is that I got tired of the race to upgrade hardware to keep up with the upper end specs of the latest releases. The number 1 thing I miss most about getting out of PC Gaming altogether is the endless user mods for various games ala Oblivion, EA's NHL series, etc. I also really, really miss flying my planes in MS's Flight Simulator game. Those were the days man!!!
Anyway... on to answer Rob's question... currently on the XBox 360 I'm playing...
Fallout 3 - second time through
NHL 09 - Second season
Tiger Woods 09
Bioshock - 3rd time through
GTA IV - need to finish it first time around.

PC: Morrowind (finally getting some real traction), Guild Wars (holiday quests)
360: Fallout 3 (finished it once, now cleaning up achievements; will roll another character soon)
I still need to finish Mass Effect and Bioshock on 360. I'm about 3/4 through with ME and maybe halfway through Bioshock, but I'll probably start over since I forget how the hell to play it. *sigh*

Christmas break is a holy time that is spent getting quality gaming in. Last year it was with a heavily-modded Oblivion (my first playthrough). The year before that was an obsessive, bleary-eyed, appetite-losing week-and-a-half of Wizardry 8. This year is particularly special, though, as I've officially designated it the rightful time to replay my favorite game, Planescape: Torment.
So, as per my signature, that's what I'm playing now. I actually started it late last night and played through the mortuary BUT I just saw that Qwinn updated his Planescape goodies to a new version (http://www.shsforums.net/index.php?showtopic=38180) so I'll probably install those, restart, and skim through the beginning again real quick to get back caught up. And it will be good.
.
@Rob: JFYI - I stumbled upon two cool mods for Fallout 3 the other day: MTUI (http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=43) and Interface Mod - Revelation (http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=47). The second one borrows textures/themes from Fallout Tactics, but I read that it also introduces a bit of latency before menus pop up since it has to load in uncached textures. But the first one was definitely something I have tucked away for the next time that I go back to Fallout 3 since I hated having to scroll around so much with that clunky UI. And, of course, there are also a few visual/texture mods out there already which I think gridiron's got going on in some of his screenshots.

I'm in-between games for the moment. Finished up The Force Unleashed last week, haven't decided what to get into next. I'm saving another run-through of Fallout 3 for next year when the DLC hits.
I did pick up Freespace 2 on Good Old Games, so I may get into that a bit - I'm a huge fan of the X-wing series, which should be somewhat similar. Also bought Stalker over the weekend, so I did that a bit today.
BTW - if you haven't, I highly recommend completing Mass Effect. The GWN folks can probably tell you how high it ranks on my list.

Playing WOW as usual. I'm the guild leader now and my brother, his wife, my future wife that I met thru WOW, my other brother, and 3 co-workers are all running dungeons and leveling up even more toons.
I restarted FarCry the other day, messing around in there for 30-45min at a time.. Just something to do and bask in all it's maxxed out glory on my 24" lcd =)
I gotta say, I used to be such a hardcore pc gamer since the glory days of DOS. And I would play soooo many games. In the last year since I started playing WOW, I dont really play many games anymore. I have the time, I just dont really feel like it. I'd rather play WOW. It was GuildWars for about 2years before that....
Meh.... it's still my hobby, but I've kinda gotten into a single minded thing with WOW......

I feel ya there. Dark Age of Camelot was my first MMO. I started playing in on launch day, back in October, 2001. Through it, I discovered the incredibly vast nature of a persistent, online world, and the possibilities for discovery that the genre as a whole offered. I bought only one, single-player game during the 3 years I played that. Then, in May, 2004, I gave up DAoC for City of Heroes. I played it for four years, and then left it for good, last July. Its character creator is, hands down, the very best in the market, but after four years, I came to realize just how static its world really is when you take away all of the missions you can play through, and backstories you can learn about. Its badge system was the only thing keeping me playing when I left, and I was tired of trying to keep up with its growing list of badges.
Today, WoW has become my MMO of choice. I love its artistic style, quest system, dungeons, and all of the little "quality of life" details that combine to create a living, breathing storybook.
As for single-player titles, I've got my 360 for those. I was given a copy of Dead Space for Christmas, and my best friend and I recently started the co-op campaign in Gears of War 2.

MS Flight X, COD: WAW, and GTA: IV are the titles I have been playing mostly lately. I have a boatload of titles that are collecting dust here at the moment though:- Bioshock, Guild Wars, Crysis are just a few that I have played for an hour or so and then never bothered with much since. I have a new year resolution: to start being more selective when buying games, and only to get the titles which I am genuinely interested in.:p:

If you have a chance to get a 64-bit OS, grab the 64-bit add-on pack for Far Cry. It's not as big a difference as they'd have you believe, but it does help.

In case anybody has missed the eighty screenshots and my ramblings for the last two months in SHOW&TELL, I'm playing Far Cry 2. Heh, heh. I always only play one game at a time, and this has been a good one. After two months and almost sixty hours of gameplay, I'm still having a good time and look forward to an hour or two almost every night. I don't know what I'll play next, but Far Cry 2 will be a hard act to follow, in my opinion. Edward.

I've been playing Far Cry 2 as well and I'm really enjoying it more and more as time goes on.
I also still play Battlefield 2 (multiplayer) on a regular basis, I'm getting close to 3 years playing it! Definetly getting my money's worth there.
I need to finish the 3rd part of FEAR, very close to the end of it, but since starting Far Cry 2 I havent had the interest to finish it.
Another game Ive had awhile now and havent played very far into is Bioshock, maybe one day I'll get back into that one.
My next game which I've already pre-ordered and looking forward to is Mirror's Edge.

Like at least one other in this thread, I also have steered away from PC gaming due to economic restraints (hmmm...heating oil or $300 video card?). So I've been sticking to 360 and Wii.
360 - Portal, Gears of War (expecting GoW2 for Christmas), and soon LEGO Indiana Jones (got it for my son for Christmas).
Wii - Wii Sports <-- This is great because I can easily play with family.

This is my situation too. There was an aritcle I read a few months ago that asked if WoW (and games like it) was the death of PC gaming, which seemed odd since WoW keeps people on their PC's. I understand it a bit better now since I tend to spend 80% of my gaming time on WoW, leaving very little time for other games.
So much to do in WoW, and it really is a spectacular-looking game, if you can accept the art style. I spent 20 minutes yeaterday just flying around looking at the sights. The buildings in Storm Peaks are especially awesome for a video game.
When I can rip myself away from WoW, I'm playing the new King's Bounty and Fallout 3.

I’ve been playing WoW most of the time with my wife. Level 80 mage mostly in a “casual” raiding guild (casual meaning raids are limited to 3 days a week at most). I also play around with a Gnome Death Knight every now and then, fun class to play but I’ve only got that alt to 62. Wrath has been an incredible expansion to me, far better than Burning Crusade. The lore, the quests, hell even with the tiny graphical update in the 3.0 patch; everything just looks, plays and feels better than ever. Of course having a new PC and a widescreen LCD doesn’t hurt either.
While 80% of the time or more is in front of WoW, I may pick up Fallout 3 with some Christmas money over the holidays. Maybe play Mass Effect again; I got through about 50% of the game last time (both would be on the 360).

As I suspected I never did finish Witcher EE before Christmas. I stopped playing it early this year when I heard about the Enhanced Edition. I was pretty well along in Chapter 5 at that time. When I loaded up EE I wound up getting stuck in Chapter 2 for some reason. I tried to hurry along and get back to where I was and I must of overlooked something. BTW - a patch has just been released to fix the EAX problems some have had.
I fully expect to be firing up Fallout 3 and Far Cry 2 which Santa should be delivering to me. As a result Witcher will have to go on the back burner. At the rate I spend on gaming these days it will likely keep me busy the entire next year.

Get the play on mod. It allows you to continue playing after the ending. I forget the actual name of the mod, but you're sure to find something you like here - http://www.fallout3nexus.com - as there are literally thousands of mods for the game ranging from new weapons, characters, the ability to kill kids, to major game mechanic changes and even new quests.

I gave alone in the dark a try, but like you, i hated the controls. It really spoiled an otherwise decent game. Same thing with the new silent hill.
Bad controls turn me off of games.
I started far cry 2 and massive effect, but they couldnt hold my interest for long. Massive effect is a decent game, but i need the motivation to go back to it. I was somewhat disappointed with far cry 2. I guess i dont like open ended games as much as i used to. I like well defined missions, not just "go out and accept missions from whoever you run into".
Right now i am just about finished one of my older games. I am playing "prey".

Sorry to hear your not digging Far Cry 2 though. Maybe you should give it a bit more time. To me its a game you cant be in a rush with.
Ive got around 35 hours in it so far and I'm only 64% through it. Take your time exploring for diamonds, trying out all the weapons, just looking around and enjoying the scenery. The game is very well made IMO but thats just me.

Time to chime in (been meaning to for a while). I'm currently playing Max Payne 2. I have the original as a boxed game, but the sequel was nowhere to be found in local shops anymore, so I took advantage of the recent Steam holiday sale to get it that way for 9 euros.
During my years working for Blue's News and 3D Gamers I had little time to play, and managed to complete only a dozen+ games in a decade (like Doom 3 & expansion, Far Cry, Half-Life & expansions, Half-Life 2 & Ep. 1, Max Payne, NFS Underground 1 & 2, No One Lives Forever, Splinter Cell 1-3... and not much more). I also played just about every demo ever released, but that came with the territory of running a gaming site. After retiring from 3DG, I finally caught up on a lot of games I missed at the time. The advantage is that my 2004 gaming rig (P4 3.2 GHz, vanilla 6800) can now play those titles at max res/settings. And to play contemporary games I'd first need to upgrade, so I'm putting that off until I'm done with the old titles I still want to play. Steam and the bargain bin (and maybe GoG, though I haven't seen titles there yet I really want) make that very affordable too.
So, over the past two years I caught up on (in random order): Soldier of Fortune II, Call of Duty & expansion, Call of Duty 2, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Prey, Project IGI, IGI 2, Unreal (1), Quake 4, Chronicles of Riddick, Half-Life 2 Ep.2, Portal, SiN (1), SiN Episodes 1, TrackMania Nations/United (Forever), and the Minerva: Metastasis mod for HL2. If I had to award one stand-out title of that bunch, it's Riddick, btw.
Still on the to-play pile after MP2: Unreal II, Thief 1-3, Deus Ex (1), and BioShock. I never completed my boxed copies of Final Doom, Hexen, Strife and Rise of the Triad in the early 90's either, but I think I'll pass on those, it's hard to go that far back.
And still on my wish-list from the old days are No One Lives Forever 2, System Shock 2, Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force and maybe Psychonauts and Giants: Citizen Kabuto (any suggestions for other must-haves btw?). Then it's finally time to upgrade and get Call of Duty 4, Far Cry 2, FEAR, Crysis and whatever else tickles my primarily-FPS fancy. :):

Wow that's quite a list Frans and great hearing from you! Congrats on all the great work over at Blue's News and a belated Happy Birthday. You certainly deserve the time to play catch up and looks like you have quite a bit of doing so. One great thing about not jumping into a game when it is first released is being able to fully patch it up and enjoy it. In that regard one game I would like to go back to someday is Vampire: Masquerade. As you know someone has been devoting quite a bit of time on their own for the past couple of years continually releasing unsupported patches which are over at Patches Scrolls.
Unreal 1 still looks pretty darn good even after all these years. Unreal engine was really ahead of its time.

Hey, good to hear from you, Frans. I think it's pretty neat that, when life and staying busy didn't leave time for gaming, you just put it off instead of losing interest completely, as happens to some people. Actually, I'm a little jealous of the fun you're going to have while catching up. Deus Ex, in particular, is just an all-time great, and you will love it, I'll bet. Keep us informed, and post some screenshots for us. Edward.

That is awsome Frans....You don't know how much that I wish I had games like Return To Castle Wolfenstein and Deus Ex to play for the first time....you have so much fun ahead of you.....enjoy the ride

And still on my wish-list from the old days are No One Lives Forever 2, System Shock 2, Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force and maybe Psychonauts and Giants: Citizen Kabuto (any suggestions for other must-haves btw?).
Whaddya mean maybe Psychonauts and Giants: Citizen Kabuto? Those two should have had priority over some of that other crap (Project IGI, Prey, SiN, etc)! Although I'd agree with you that Riddick was the best amongst those you had listed.
Some other older games (<=2006) that you should check out if you missed them: Painkiller (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/painkiller) and expansion (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/painkiller-battle-out-of-hell) (skip Overdose), Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/prince-of-persia-the-sands-of-time), Company of Heroes (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/company-of-heroes), Anachronox (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/anachronox), Beyond Good & Evil (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/beyond-good-evil), Mafia (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/mafia), Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/star-wars-knights-of-the-old-republic), Freelancer (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/freelancer), Titan Quest (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/titan-quest), Freedom Force (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/freedom-force), F.E.A.R. (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/fear-first-encounter-assault-recon), ...
Very cool that you're playing through the awesome old Looking Glass Studios games (Thief: The Dark Project / Gold, Thief: The Metal Age, and System Shock 2--which they collaborated with Irrational Games/2K Boston in making). Those three titles would probably make up 30% of my Top 10 Favorite Games List if I had one.
I don't know the specifics about your hardware/OS/drivers, but if you're going to try and run those games in this day and age you should at least bookmark this Thief Technical FAQ (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75031) which covers a lot of technical problems, this similar SS2 FAQ (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69958), and this patch/mod thread (http://www.ttlg.com/FORUMS/showthread.php?p=1658496#post1658496) that covers a lot of potential problems that you may encounter these days. Consult those if you run into any issues; it will save you a good deal of time, and it's easily worth the effort to make these games run 100% properly.
Additionally, I'd recommend getting System Shock 2 mods (http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php?PHPSESSID=8faf4855b5520384531d8c897cd6d6 f0&board=2.0). Or, at the very least, Rebirth (http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php?PHPSESSID=79ad378babc429d9e440229f84efe6 b0&topic=8.0) (improved 3D models), and SHTUP (http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php?PHPSESSID=79ad378babc429d9e440229f84efe6 b0&topic=22.0) (higher-resolution textures). If you really want to shine it up you can check out the other popular mods for the game: Straylight ADaoB (http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php?PHPSESSID=8faf4855b5520384531d8c897cd6d6 f0&topic=25.0) (bugfixes, balancing), Tacticool Weapons (http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php?PHPSESSID=8faf4855b5520384531d8c897cd6d6 f0&topic=691.0) (better weapon models/textures), and SHMUP (http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php?PHPSESSID=8faf4855b5520384531d8c897cd6d6 f0&topic=657.0) which enables you to swap out the lower-quality music with the higher-quality soundtrack versions.
Whew, alright I'm done.

Wow that's quite a list Frans and great hearing from you! Congrats on all the great work over at Blue's News and a belated Happy Birthday. You certainly deserve the time to play catch up and looks like you have quite a bit of doing so.
Thanks. :D: And also to gridiron and OldsterHolster for the kind comments.

I know, 3DG used to be the official release site for those patches until I left, and I pointed Werner to my friend Matthias at PS to continue those releases. I'm not sure I'll really like a first-person RPG as much as an FPS, but I already have Deus Ex to try that first. One reason I backburnered that title for so many years (Rich @ GoneGold sent me that copy way back when that site was still doing fine) is that it's much more of a time sink than a straightforward shooter, so given how little time I had for gaming in general I didn't want to start on it for fear of not getting around to any other game for the next two years or so.
Unreal 1 still looks pretty darn good even after all these years. Unreal engine was really ahead of its time.
Yeah, I was surprised at the high resolution I could crank it up with a little tweaking (my monitor's native 1680x1050, ISTR).

Hehe, ok ok. :): In my defense, I was once able to buy 3 games for 10 euros at my local gameshop, and since IGI 2 was a decent shooter that I wanted to try, I got the original too for completeness' sake. I wasted more hours in frustration due to its lack over a save (or even checkpoint) system than I care to admit though.
And after HL2 Ep1, I was sorta craving for another Source engine shooter, so when the SiN Episodes series died after the first installment, I got that instead of waiting for the series' completion like I planned. It came with the original SiN for free, so I played that first, and it wasn't too bad for a 1998 FPS if Half-Life hadn't come out soon after.
Prey was a good FPS though, better than Doom 3, IMHO.

Played the demos, found them too repetitive and tiresome, even if they played and looked fine.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/prince-of-persia-the-sands-of-time),
Enjoyed the acrobatics in the demo, but the combat less. But maybe that's more a problem of its sequels though.
Company of Heroes (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/company-of-heroes),
Not an RTS fan, even if I played that demo more than most RTS demos.
Anachronox (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/anachronox), Beyond Good & Evil (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/beyond-good-evil), Mafia (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/mafia), Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/star-wars-knights-of-the-old-republic),
Heard a lot of good things about these, I'll keep them in mind once my existing pile is depleted.
Freelancer (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/freelancer),
Played a fair chunk of a beta back in the day, but that was enough for me.
Titan Quest (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/titan-quest), Freedom Force (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/freedom-force)
Played the demos, not my cup of tea.

I'm looking forward to the Thief series too, but don't have System Shock 2 yet, and don't know where to get it (except for hunting eBay and such). I'm thinking that if Valve can persuade EA to put it on Steam, they'll have a killer hit on their hands, so here's hoping.

Right now it is Fallout 3.
I had been playing FC2 but dang that game repetative after about a couple of hours with respawning enemies and no real challenge. I watcha zebra walk up to a parked car and as soon as it touched the car I heard a thwap! and the zebra fell over dead.
The wife is now addicted to King's Bounty. Despite a camera that takes a little to get used to, if you liked HoMM then you will like this and even has a good story line. I would say this is a must have for fans of this type of game.

I sympathize with igi one and two. I spent literally 10 hours on one level of the game. I would get almost to the end of the level and someone would pop out of nowhere and drill me. Then i would have to start all over again. Its a tribute to my tenacity that i finished both games because i had a lot of frustration because of them.
As far as sin, i liked the games. Do you have or have you played, wages of sin?

Reminds me of Deadly Dozen 2. Before the unofficial patch you would have to run almost the full map just to get back into the fight. Still loved the game though. The MP portion was a blast.

No, the SiN Episodes dealie on Steam includes only SiN, not the expansion.

I was cleaning up my desk and i found my old copie of ..... Dungeon Keeper Gold!!
After a little tweaking i got it to work on XP. It still crashes sometimes but no biggie.
It still as fun as it used to be. A true classic.
