OK, troops, commanders, adventurers, and strategists around the world, time to check in and show us where you are and what you are doing, this month. I'm in Las Vegas, myself, playing a tactical shooter called Rainbow Six-Vegas 2, and, while I prefer first-person shooters without the tactical part, I'll have to admit the game is growing on me.

I kid myself and think that, after ten or so years, I should be pretty good at this shooting business, so I do silly things like trying to just use the pistol and killing all the bad guys, myself. In this game, my funeral expenses reached astronomical heights in a hurry, so I finally got with the program and began letting my squad take some of the heat. Heh, heh. Now that I've learned most of the commands and understand how my comrades respond to them, the game has gotten a lot easier, and it's kinda nice to have them "yes-sir" me and follow my orders. lol.

The graphics are fine, the gameplay is good, the mood music is above average, and there is even a little humor; like when one of the bad guys yells, "I'm under fire!" and his buddy yells back, "Well, fire back, stupid!" The weapons are pretty standard fare, but they are OK, too, and I really haven't explored all the possibilities, like a snake cam to look under doorways, and other "gadgets." All in all, the game is put together pretty well, and I don't have any real complaints. Ocassionally it will lag for up to three or four seconds for no reason, and it did freeze up, twice, but that's probably because I don't shut down anything and even stay online, so the computer probably has to multitask from time to time.

I'm afraid my screen shot attempts are pretty lame, so far, but I'll show them, anyway. This first one is near the beginning of the game, and it's nothing special; but the first thing that impressed me was how nice it was to be in a big, clean, city, instead of smoking rubble and destruction. It is also bright and colorful. I've gotten to where I really don't care for "dark" games where you have to struggle to see things.

Here's a shot of my ride arriving at the end of a level.

http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo206/OldsterHolster/Screen%20Shots/RainbowSixV22.jpg

This level was in an amusement park junkyard kind of place, and just had a load of colorful, bizarre, eye-candy. This shot doesn't do it justice, but I enjoyed the surroundings as I wasted the terrorists.

http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo206/OldsterHolster/Screen%20Shots/RainbowSixV23.jpg

I liked the helicopter rides from one part of the city to the next. Of course, you can't see the cars moving and people walking, etc. in a still shot, but the rides were quite scenic until they kicked me out to rappel down a rope and get shot at some more. Ha!

http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo206/OldsterHolster/Screen%20Shots/RainbowSixV24.jpg

This one is just a lobby shot showing more of the pleasant surroundings and views in the game. For some reason, this one came out darker than it really was.

http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo206/OldsterHolster/Screen%20Shots/RainbowSixV25.jpg

Ah, yes. There's nothing like a machine-gun turrent on the balcony to work up an appetite for breakfast. This is as close to an action shot that I could manage, so far. While the game isn't that hard, it isn't very forgiving, either; and if you stick your head out to take a screen shot, you usually get killed, forthright. I'll do better before I finish it.

http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo206/OldsterHolster/Screen%20Shots/RainbowSixV26.jpg

OK, that's my report. Your turn. Edward.

Looking at these screenshots, I can't help but wonder...

Does it bother anyone else that Vegas - the Sin City of cities, is completely devoid of pedestrians in this game? Did SWAT have the entire city evacuated or something?

I never thought of it like that, but it really makes sense. It would be nice to atleast see some cars and people beyond the police barriers in the streets.

I'll get some screenshots tonight when I get home. I've mostly been playing the WoW expansion beta and Team Fortress 2 this month.

Well, no, it doesn't bother me much. There are cars and trucks driving around, and there are hostages and other NPC's running around in several places in the game. I don't really remember being on streets with sidewalks to much, but I'll be on the lookout for pedestrians. With bullets flying and bombs in the Civic Center and Casinos, I'd be staying the hell off the streets, too. Heh, heh.

Of course it could always be better, but I play these things for fun; and if I were to let every little flaw or deviation from reality affect me, negatively, then I'd be better off playing FreeCell, you know? Edward.

As promised I am now into The Witcher EE (UK - uncensored) version. Unfortunately it requires a third party program to take in game screenshots which I don't have. Honestly I don't notice a big change in the graphics and NPC's which were promised. But I am still into the first chapter and may notice more when I get into town. The game definitely runs and loads a heck of a lot better. With my limited playtime this will likely take me into the holiday season at which point I figure at least the first patch for Fallout 3 will be out and make for some good holiday gaming.

From what I read on The Witcher forums the print screen key doesn't work in the game, you have to use a third party app such as Fraps. I'll give it a try though and we'll see.

Well, I am in Mexico trying to get things under control.
Me and my fellow Ghost have our hands full, but I am quite sure we will prevail with some good planning and a few headshots along the way!

This is also a Tom Clancy game...here are a few screens.

This guy is gonna take a bullet right to the nose

Well, Gridiron, I guess it's you and me. I was hoping for some more glimpses into other folk's game worlds, but nobody is posting pictures except you and I. Oh well, I'll just post some more, myself. Heh, heh.

I thought this Chinese theater setting was pretty, and I'm really noticing that the graphics in this game are quite nice. The only video setting I changed before starting the game was to change the resolution to 1920X1200, but I think I noticed it defaulted to 8X AA, and the curves and angled lines are really clean and crisp with no jaggies at all.

http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo206/OldsterHolster/Screen%20Shots/RainbowSixV27.jpg

Here's that "snake-cam" gadget I mentioned, earlier. It's pretty handy. You can slip it under a door and see where the bad guys are and even "tag" the ones you want your buddys to take out. You can then go to another door, yourself, and order the team to toss in a flashbang and enter their door. You can then go in your door and catch the bad guys from behind while they are blinded and just clean house.

http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo206/OldsterHolster/Screen%20Shots/RainbowSixV28.jpg

This guy fell asleep during the class on flanking maneuvers and covering your ass. He is about to become unemployed. Heh, heh.

Go back to last month's thread, ROLLCALLSHOW&TELL-SEPTEMBER, where I explained the whole procedure. Basically, after hitting PRTSCRN, open up "Paint," and click "Paste" under the "Edit" tab at the top. You then have to save it and upload it to a host site so that you can link to it in a forum post. It's really easy and fast. Edward.

Maybe it has something to do with your browser and the fact that it is a .png file instead of a jpg or gif? I didn't have the problem but that is all I could think of.

To answer gorilla. I use http://www.xfire.com/ to capture my screenshots. It is actually a chat program but it has many other features like capturing and automatically uploading your screenshots to the web, capturing video, and broadcasting live video. I then go to the website, click the button to see my screenshot in full size, and copy that URL.

One of my favorite things about WoW, other than the people I play with, is the pop culture references that Blizzard scatters accross the world. I've played way more hours than I'm proud to admit, but I still get a chuckle from new ones I find every day.

This one is referencing Lost in Sholazar Basin, a new zone in the expansion

I have been playing some Flight Sim X over the past couple of days. I go through cycles with this title, playing for a week or two and then leaving it for a couple of weeks. It's pure simulation and isn't something you can get into in just a couple of hours, but when you do start to get the hang of it, it's cool. I have always been a flight sim fan, I even had one of the first for home computers, on the ZX81 (I'm sure you can imagine what that looked and played like:p:). I have had flight sims on every platform I have owned.

I have loads of add-ons for FSX, which add new adventures and planes to fly, which keeps the interest levels up. Learning to fly has always been my number one ambition, but seeing as it's never paid off, Flight Sim X is second best. You can fly online, and you can have fellow human pilots and air traffic controllers. I am in a virtual fyling club and we do the things real flying clubs do, and they also give flying lessons too. You can do this by using voice comms and both sharing the plane online, it's a great feature!

Here's some screenies:

Well, I finished Rainbow Six-Vegas 2. I was a hard sell and somewhat skeptical at the beginning, but by the end I was impressed enough to order the first Rainbow Six-Vegas. The tactical element became second nature as I progressed, and I'll have to admit it added a lot to this shooter.

I also changed my mind about the game being pretty easy. It got harder, and, just about the time I felt comfortable using my buddies, there were a couple of levels where I was by myself, and they were a bitch. They got me well into the cussing stage and almost to the fist-pounding point as I played the same sequence umpteen times, only to be killed by one last hidden sniper even when I was crouched and hidden. This was one of those games where the enemy seemed to be able to see you just a smidgen before you could see them, and there were plenty of times I ended up dead without a clue as to what I had done wrong.

That's OK, and winning a challenging game is always more fun than beating an easy one. I'll have to admit that I looked at a walkthrough for the last big boss battle. I worked on that thing for three hours, last night, and suspected that I was using bad strategy. I was. I was hiding from the attack helicopter and shooting the soldiers, and I should have been shooting the helicopter and hiding from the soldiers. I kept getting better and better, and I'll bet I had thirty bodies piled up in the courtyard at one time, but they just kept on coming, and I always died, sooner or later. When I followed the proper strategy, I beat the damned thing in about four minutes. Heh, heh.

I could complain about a few things, but the game was fun, overall, so why bother. If you're a shooter, it's definitely worth playing; especially since it's not brand-new and therefore pretty cheap. Here are my final screen shots.

This one is really nothing, but it shows the nice, clean, lines again, and it illustrates the ability to approach cover and then use a key to change to third person view to see around corners. I personally prefer "lean" keys, but this worked pretty well.

http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo206/OldsterHolster/Screen%20Shots/RainbowSixV212.jpg

I mentioned I enjoyed my helicopter rides between levels, and this last one was set in Costa Rica, so I had a change of scenery.

http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo206/OldsterHolster/Screen%20Shots/RainbowSixV213.jpg

The bad guy had some pretty nice digs down there.

http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo206/OldsterHolster/Screen%20Shots/RainbowSixV214.jpg

And finally, here's the defeated bad guy on the ground, along with the downed helicopter on the left, and my buddies and me are getting ready to head for the bar. Heh, heh.

http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo206/OldsterHolster/Screen%20Shots/RainbowSixV215.jpg

That's all for now until I get into the next game. You folks keep posting shots, too, and have a great weekend. Edward.

So another month, another late showing by JC and another driving sim.

GT Legends

This game is often seen as the spirtual sequeal to Grand Prix Legends, the game I showed last week. That said it is a far easier and more forgiving game then GPL. While it would take many weeks to win a race on the easiest setting in GPL, a win in GTL will most likely come in the first few days. This does not mean it is an easy game, anyone used to playing a driving sim with quick and nimble cars will find the 1965-76 cars hard to drive, what with there huge over/understeer, poor breaks and body roll. The cars power down the straight and have to be nursed through the turns. There is also a huge fan base with many great home made cars, skins and tracks.

Well, my last screen shot was the very end of Rainbow Six-Vegas 2, and I thought I was done, but I found new life in the game. I played through the "Story" in single player, and right underneath on the menu is "Terrorist Hunt." There are ten maps, similar to, but not the same as, "Story" mode, and you simply have to kill all the terrorists in each one. You have a counter on your screen showing how many are left, and it varies from around 25 to as high as 40 at the start.

They give you settings for difficulty, enemy density, and even the choice to play "Lone Wolf" without your squad, but I just left everything on the medium settings; and, I'll tell you what, it put me to the test! I estimate it averaged around two hours for me to beat each level, and one of them, "Murder Town," must have been close to five hours over two nights to finally kill number 40 and win the level. TWICE, I got down to only one terrorist left, and the bastard somehow got me, and I had to start all over, again. There is no saving or checkpoints, so if you or one of your men dies, then it's back to square one.

While frustrating, it really makes you cautious and thoughtful, and it's probably one of the most realistic shooter environments I've been in. My screenies don't include any action shots, because trying to capture them gets you killed in a heartbeat, but I snapped a few more, anyway.

The first two are just one of the casino settings. The game is just pretty.

http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo206/OldsterHolster/Screen%20Shots/RainbowSixV216.jpg

http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo206/OldsterHolster/Screen%20Shots/RainbowSixV217.jpg

A nice and quiet quaint little street, but in a matter of seconds there will be terrorists rapeling down ropes, coming through windows and doorways, and trying to sneak up behind you. The AI is pretty damned good, although irritating, at times, and you can't get away with too much Rambo stuff.

http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo206/OldsterHolster/Screen%20Shots/RainbowSixV218.jpg

On a few occasions, usually after starting the level over about ten times, you can find flaws in the AI to exploit and reduce that counter by large margins. This shot is dark, but if you look closely, you can see that there are about ten bodies piled up under the ladder. I stationed my men at the other end of this short tunnel with ladders at both ends, and we just sat there and plugged them, one after another, as they climbed down. It didn't happen often, however, and you usually had to earn every kill.

http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo206/OldsterHolster/Screen%20Shots/RainbowSixV219.jpg

I was a carpenter for most of my life, so I can't help but nose around construction sites as I come across them in games. I get a little chuckle out of seeing flaws by developers who have probably never been on a real construction site. This scene is pretty, but there are no cast lintels over door and window openings in the block walls, re-bar is sticking out of block and other odd places, the stairs are totally illegal, and a single 2 X 4 top plate on a framed wall is cantilevered out six feet supporting two roof trusses. Heh, heh, heh.

http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo206/OldsterHolster/Screen%20Shots/RainbowSixV220.jpg

And, finally, here's the beginning of the last level, "Refinery." I'll try to beat it tonight while watching the Red Sox/Rays game. I doubt I'll take any more shots, so this really will be my final addition to this thread. I've got the first Rainbow Six-Vegas here, so I'll be starting it, soon. I'll say, again, and emphasize that this is quite the shooter, and this additional content makes it even more worth the money in my opinion. Have a great weekend, everybody. Edward.

Great! I'll be interested to hear your opinions, and I think you will be in for a treat. Believe it or not, I'm still playing that thing. I mentioned in my last reply that I was on the last of ten "Terrorist Hunt" bonus levels, The Refinery, but then I noticed a scroll bar on the menu, and there were three more levels to play. That's thirteen extra levels, in all, and I've still got the last one to go. The game just gets better and better in my opinion, and getting this many hours of pleasurable gameplay is just great for a change. It's highly replayable, too, and I'm sure I'll come back to it in the future.

The graphics and effects are definitely above average, and this shot shows an air-conditioning barrier that impressed me. The movement, sound, and visual effects as you tried to either shoot through it or move through it were pretty realistic. Throwing a grenade at it really makes for some cool concussion effects.

I'll be starting the first Rainbow Six-Vegas next week. If I would have suspected that the game was this good, I would have played it, first, but I'm still looking forward to it. Edward.

I just went through a disk with old pictures (from about 6 years ago) and found some classics of a guy you may remember.

I am currently replaying HL2:ep2 with Cinematic Mod 8 with absolutely full settings in 1920x1200. I'm doing a gnome run which entails bring the lawn gnome from one of the first buildings in the game to the very end where you put it inside the rocket and it gets launched into space. I save often.

It's pretty:

I played through Crysis warhead on gamer/enthusiast settings just before getting this monitor and there were some very beautiful parts of that game that I wish I had screenshots of.

I'm also playing Assassin's Creed, DiRT, TF2, UT3 and CoD4 on high or near highest settings. There are actually console options to play TF2 with even higher than normal rez textures, the ones they use in the "Meet the X" videos.

Makes me very glad I bought a new video card but I still can't stop myself from playing Diablo 2 every once in a while.

I have started Rainbow Six Vegas 2. I am early on, like in the middle of the 2nd mission. It is pretty much the same as the first one, which i liked, so i am enjoying this one alot.

I really like these squad based games. I would say so far this is alittle easier than Ghost Recon, with the fun factor being about the same.

So far , everything Edward has said about the game has held true and I don't have much else to add right now. It is a great shooter and it is loads of fun

Here are a few screenshots.

I've been wanting to add to this thread but have been very busy working to get the new casino open.
This is the last game I was playing and I picked out the best shots I had, GOW is a dark game so there wasn't much to choose from the shots I had..

Oh, and those screenshots of Vegas, man they got some of the casino buildings right but not even close to were they really are.

Rainbow Six Vegas 2 looks really close to how FEAR did based on those screenshots. Probably uses the same engine.

Games these days can really look beautiful even if they are still a bit off of totally realistic.

So seen as it is still October and I'm bored. I thought I'd post some screens.

This is a fan made car for GT Legends. Its the Porsche 935, GTL's first 200+mph car. It's also, imo, the finest fan made car in the game. It is very hard to drive, flooring it, even in 3rd, will have you eating wall.

The Martni 935 eating up the track at Sears Point, USA.

A black 935 gets a big silde going out of the Old Harpin at Donington, England

Same car at the same track. Note the shape of the car and the difference in size between the front and back wheels.

All this power and speed can lead to some big off's, 935 getting some bad air at Monthlery, France.
