Realistic Sims (flight, driving, nautical or strategic city building) are not usually my thing Tim. But those screens sure look fine and I've had a lot of real life experience at sea - offshore ocean racing, cruising, island hopping, inland waterways, on lakes and bays in vessels large and small - engine and wind powered, and both. Even lived a half block from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapoils, Maryland for several years and had a number of good friends who either graduated and/or taught there. It's a big sailing town and still serves as the state capitol. Near the academy is also the oldest college in America and as a result, you meet all sorts of people - regardless of your age, military background or social status.

So if I get this game and find that it's just not my cup of tea, there are plenty of other people I know who would probably love it.

Cheers, Terry

I actually played the first silent hunter game a number of years ago and was disappointed. It was kind of boring and not very visually exciting. I always thought if someone could do it right, a sub sim would be cool. Stealth underwater.

Stealth underwater.

There used to be another sub game titled U22 I think or something similar... it was an OLD OLD OLD OLD OLD game though =]

Not that it was a realistic sub sim but the Aquanox games were pretty good looking. Just not nearly as good as they could have been.

And what was that super good looking Sega Dreamcast title with the dolphin that came out shortly before that game system went belly-up?

There were also gorgeous underwater levels in both Grim Fandango and The Longest Journey of all things. They were 2D / 3D though and obviously just limited, linear adventure puzzle settings. But many 3D action games like NOLF, Undying and especially American McGee's Alice have had some extremely nice swimming levels. Heck, even Heretic 2 had a really effective multi-directional water portal puzzle in it and Half-Life briefly employed some swimming areas too. So it's obvious that underwater environs can be done very well these days. I hope we finally see a game that uses them to full effect, with compelling, challenging gameplay that actually takes advantage of the unique atmosphere, visuals, sounds and physics down there.

If so, then perhaps a worthy game based on The Abyss and other great movies / novels will emerge. A cutting edge game based on the adventures of Captain Nemo / 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea could be very cool. Or just an improved, contemporary, squad-based Navy Seals action title that employs all the best new advancements to make it truly immersive and fun. There are lots of good possibilities for fresh new games set beneath the briny sea.

Cheers, Terry
