I donīt get it.... 2 people with practically identical systems can have RADICAL performance differences. And whatīs with all the necessary tweaking? Why the hell didnīt they make the game optimize itself for your system straight out of the box? Will some of these issues be straightened up in the next patch perhaps?

From all the posts I have read, on various Forums....Doom 3 seems to run very well "out of the box", it just depends on what "Settings" you choose to run it on.
I think that the people who are "tweaking" the game, are just looking for a smoother performance at "higher" settings than they would normally run the game on........a bit like overclocking your video card......you don't really need to overclock your card, but some gamers do it so that they can run games at higher settings than normal.

Yea, it let me run 1024x768 on medium (the spec it recommended to me) fine, I had to do a little tweaking to get 1024x768 on high with 4xAA and 8xAF running well. Sure I could have stayed at the lower res, but for me getting my games to run their best with the best quality graphics is half the fun.

Hey guys, finally got the game running pretty smooth, stays in the 40s or so, but will dip to 20 ish occasionally. A BIG step up for the choppiness with the recommended setting (Medium @ 640x480). Now itīs at 1024x768 at Medium, not bad at all.
Iīve yet to meet ANYONE IRL who has gotten it running fun straight out of the box. If youīre running a 9800 or higher of course it should run decently straight up, but if youīre playing on a 5700 (me), a 5200 (roommate) or a 9600XT (friend who let me borrow it) you theoretically SHOULD be able to just install, let it scan your system and run smoothly. All of us have had to jump into the config file and change the Mink, ImageCache and a few other settings, which is totally ridiculous considering the game has a system scan.
This isnīt just a few FPS either, my FPS jumped about 10-15 or so and lost all the choppiness as well. Why doesnīt system scan just set it up this way right out? After 4 years couldnīt they at least get the system scan decent? Thatīs just unacceptable for a game that you dish out 55 bucks for.
I hope Valve has their stuff a little straighter when HL2 comes out.

What exactly did you change? I'd like to give it a try.

seta image_cacheMegs 256
seta image_useCache 1
seta image_cacheMinK 20480
Those are the 3 setting I changed. Made it go from a stuttery mess to a quite smooth and enjoyable experience. Same thing with all my friends who had it quite stuttery. Good luck!

I'll try that too as I get stuttering upon loading areas the first few minutes I play every time it seems on high settings.

I tried it and it worked quite nicely. I didn't have a "stuttery mess" to start with but I noticed some slow down and hesitation here and there especially when I had the sound set to surround. It seems to have cleaned it up!
Thanks.

I got it yesterday and I've done some tweaking. I'm running it on 1024x768, medium settings. On high settings, all the characters' faces are split down the middle, half light half dark. Weird.
Thanks for the tweak changes. I'll try them.
Anyone know how to adjust the AA from the console? If I change it in the game, on a restart, the game reverts to 640x480. That was pretty annoying.

You need to create an autoconfig file to go along with the DoomConfig file. Tweakguide for Doom (http://www.tweakguides.com/Doom3_1.html) shows how to do it and what to tweak. I came across it after trying out pig's tweaks.
