I'm curious about the game Divine Divinity and the sequel Beyond Divinity.

I know that at least a few of you have played these games. If you had to quantify them, would you say that they are closer to either the Baldur's Gate or Diablo style of RPG games ??

I've only played Divine Divinity, but I'd say it's a bit closer to D2 than to Baldur's Gate. I still think it's a lot better than D2 though.

The first dungeon is kind of boring, but once that's over the game becomes much better. The environment is also more interactive than BG's ever was. Pretty much everything can be picked up, moved or used. It's also very rich, there's a ton of sidequests with different possible outcomes and NPC's all over. The storyline is standard fare, but it's not too bad either.

DD is actually one of my favorite PC RPG's. I definitely think it's worth getting.

Beyond Divinity is closer to Diablo BUT it is a much better "RPG" than Diablo in the classic meaning of the term RPG. Does that make sense?

Err... I guess I mean to say that it's more or less in the middle. At it's heart, it's an action RPG, with the interactions, NPC's and story that is more in line with classic RPG's like BG. Perfect for people like me.

Beyond Divinity is not a sequel though, it's more like a side story. The upcoming Divine Divinity 2 is the sequel. I can't really tell you much about BD however, I just haven't played it enough.

Both Divinity games are good, and is a mixture of both diablo and BG, leaning a little closer to Diablo, as it is fairly linear.

I thought tha Sacred was just as good, if not a better than Divinity.
You have a choice of characters to play, and a fairly large world to play in.
The game is linear in the respect that you have to finish a major quest to go to a new area, but you can go back anywhere you had been previously, and I loved the teleporters! Plus you get to actually ride a horse in the game!
And there are loads of side quests.
They both have demos available, so give them a spin, if your "speedy" download can handle them! :p:

zing!

Actually, you've piqued my interest in Sacred. I think I'll have to give that demo a whirl.

About Divine Divinity, I just wanted to add that the trading system in the game is very nice. You don't need a bazillion gold to buy what you want, you can just trade items for other items.

Also, the game's soundtrack has to be one of the best I've ever heard.

Thanks for all the info, guys !!

Having been bored witless with the Diablo games, I've decided to pass on the Divinity series and go with playing some older RPGs that I've never had a chance to.

I'm looking to pick up...

Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura
Arx Fatalis
Fallout 1 & 2
Dues Ex: GOTY

The only problem is that GoGamer.com only offers the DVD box, which I assume means OEM and no manuals are included.

GameStop.com just doesn't state if they are retail boxes or OEM DVD cases. So it's a blind gamble there.

And EBgames.com is also lacking any description as to whether or not they are OEMs or retail boxes.

It's times like this that it REALLY sucks not having a game store nearby. :face4:

EDIT: Oh well, I'll just settle for the manual in .pdf on the disks.

I've added Grim Fandango to the list too. :):

I was gonna warn against Beyond Divinity, thinking it was infected with the Starforce virus (http://www.makeabackup.com/modules.php?name=Protections_Database&op=search&query=StarForce), that doesn't appear to be the case. Coulda sworn I saw it listed there before but it looks like it's not, if it ever was. Damn selective memory! Or maybe it was listed there but was ordered by its makers to have it removed.

Anyway, for anyone here who may not be aware of Starforce there's a good page for you to check up on now and then to see if any games you have or wanna get might have it.

Being a mix of Diablo and BD, two games which I love, I don't know what could not make this my favorite game

Well, Gaim, as you know, I only play shooters; but I did play Morpheus and Grim Fandango with a friend a few years back, and I heartily recommend Grim Fandango. That thing is wonderful, and I guarantee it will make you laugh. Its just delightful, and you will enjoy the time you spend playing it. Edward.

Gaim, I really think you're missing out if you don't get DD. The combat is hack & slash, but there are hundreds of non-fedex quests with different possible outcomes and tons of different NPC's to talk to. If you like RPG's you can't not like DD :):
