I have a call of Duty 1 game (origional CD´s) and I have played this game for many enjoyable hours. Recently I decided to refomat my HD. After a few weeks I wanted to Play COD again so I decided to reinstall. The installation worked find and then I tried to play the game. The screen went black with the mouse still working but the game never started. I performed the Ctrl-alt-del function and saw two windows open for single player. I closed down these windows and tried again various ways. With CD with Icon all with the same results. I uninstalled and reinstalled again with the very same results. Can anyone comment on this?

Welcome to 3D Gamers!
You do have to go into the user-choice menus and configure your program to what your system has for video/audio. It may default to something beyond your video card or monitor can accept. Sound scheme may also be different.
And it would probably require a registration process on-line. Hope you kept that original activation reply! Don't forget to check if there are any updates or patches. Did you also update your DirectX program?

He shouldn't have to register online. Not once have I ever been forced to register. Just annoyingly pressured to do so.

After reformatting your computer, did you reinstall all the latest drivers for your computer? In particular, did you reinstall the latest video and sound card drivers?

Why did you reformat your computer? If it were a virus, it could still be there sitting in the MBR. Also, when you reformatted, did you simply repair Windows and install on top of it, or did you do a full format, deleted the patricians and than reinstall? All of these could contribute to your problem, or simply not matter at all. But knowing this would help. Also, what kind of computer do you have, specs wise? Any information that could help us.

I will check the audio/video defaults and get back to you with some results. Yes I did reformat for annoying viruses and spyware but my machine was long over due for a format (2.5 years of use in my home by all my family). We did do a full format. Specs wise we run with a ASRock mother board with a Pentium 2.2 prescott processor. I have a on board video but I have a video board too. Radeon 9600 SE all of which show no conflicts in the hardware. I will check any updates and see if this will help. In the meantime I am very grateful for the help and if you can think of anything more let me know.

Make sure your onboard video is disabled in the BIOS. Edward.

Whenever doing a reinstall of the OS, it is important to "clean the slate" before starting. That means a deletion of any partitions on the hard drive, then shut down with none formed. Restart, form new partitions then format.
Then there will be no latent hidden files to foul the install. It will also ensure that no latent viral forms exist. Would be a good idea to copy to paper any registration tags or user IDs prior to the sanitizing.
A lot of programming (games, esp.) that require the presence of the install CD in a drive for verification. If you start the program from the OS menu then insert the program disk, there may be two initiation paths. May be best to insert the program disk, wait for the auto-run menu.. then "play" for only one program instance.
An update patch may negate the need for the install disk.
