Hey Y'all,
Everyone seems to be talking about Doom 3 and Far Cry as far as PC games go. Has anyone yet played Painkiller? It supposedly puts out 100x the polygons of any other game right now. Hard to believe. Incredible if true. This is the game i have been waiting to play while building my new rig. It has the biggest bosses in a game since Serious Sam. I have heard alot of people have trouble installing or getting the game to run properly.

I went through it twice, and it was all right if you like mindless shooters. It had its moments, but it had a lot of bugs; and they really screwed me up by coming out with a patch that caused more problems than it solved. I was half-way through it for the second time, and then I couldn't load saved games all of a sudden. I had to start all over after reinstalling and just using the first patch. I guess they fixed it, but it kinda pissed me off.

The graphics were OK, but it wasn't nearly the game that Far Cry was; and I doubt that I'll replay it in the future. It was a good time filler until Doom 3 came out, and its better that The Suffering, which I played after Painkiller; but don't expect to be overly impressed. It's OK, that's all. Edward.

I never had trouble running the game, except for the copy protection thing. It was easily bypassed using the official fix.

The graphics in Painkiller are good not only from a technical point of view but from an artistic point of view as well, except, arguably, for the first chapter. People Can Fly managed to make Purgatory look very varied and appropriately enough, chaotic. Some of the levels are just amazing to look at, like the opera house and the abandoned factory. The final level is also very original and memorable. The creepy ambient music gives the game an equally creepy atmosphere, although it sure isn't Doom 3/Undying/System Shock 2 scary. The game also sports an awesome physics engine.

The gameplay is pretty much like Serious Sam: old school, simple and hectic. I didn't thing it was a bad thing, but I'm pretty open as far as video games go :):

Luckily I never had any problems running/installing the game for the most part either. It's a good game, but yeah I wouldn't put Far Cry or Doom 3 ahead of it by any means.

I agree the PK engine is really impressive, would love to see other titles using it.

If you're building a new PC then you should get all 3 honestly, the DX9 games are a whole new experience. I can only hope some 1st/3rd person RPG's use it's features soon.

Yep,
I just finished my building my computer. And all three( Doom 3, Far Cry, Painkiller) are on my shopping list. The new DX9 games and the new engines are two big reasons why I decided to build a new computer. They probably would have played on my dell, but i wanted to learn how to build my own rig and i wanted to put everything i wanted in it, not just buy a pre-made from someone else.

After reading a bunch of player reviews, I've decided that I'll probably pick up Painkiller when it hits the $20 or under price tag.

I'd just built my new system as well, so that means I've also got a shopping bag stuffed with newly purchased games waiting for me to play. Unfortunately my sound card was defective so I'm stuck with 2.1 speakers until the replacement arrives. I absolutely refuse to load games like Doom 3 and FarCry until I've got my 5.1 speakers up and running.

Sorry to hear about your soundcard problem, Gaim. I installed a turtle beach santa cruz in my machine and using just too speakers with a subwoofer, it has amazing cinema quality sound. It sounds alot richer than the soundblaster in my dell. But someday i will have to experiment with 5.1 sound and see what i have been missing. In the meantime it will have to be doom 3, painkiller, far cry in 2.1..

Here (http://mech.fr.pl/mech_-_painkiller.mpg)'s a very cool Painkiller video I came across. I don't know who made it, but it's great :):

I think the band in it is the one that made the song in the game's ending.
