I was wondering what peoples favorite type of game music is. I know it depends on the game, but in general, what gets your blood flowing and adrenaline pumping during a game?
For me, I love heavy metal in games. I think it fits great with fps, rts, and driving games. I wish more games had a more metal based soundtrack. The exception is rpgs, where an epic, orchestal score is favored.

Depends on the game, the first thing I did in UT 2k4 was put a bunch of old school metal like Ironman by Sabbath and AC/DC's Thunderstruck. Dealing death in a leviathan with either of those playing is really cool. I think the orchestra score in Call of Duty is just about perfect for the game. It really depends on the subject.

I liked the orchestral stuff in WW2 games, it just seems to set the mood. Then for death matches like UT2k4 I like metal. Anything else it doesn't really matter. I play SWG but I haven't even turned the sound on for about 8 months because I am sick of hearing the same songs over and over.

I like Jeremy Soul-ish orchestral music for RPG's. For FPS' it's definitely metal (Painkiller) or fast paced techno (UT2004).
For space sims or RTS' I like mysterious new age stuff, kinda like Homeworld 1 & 2. Their soundtracks really augmented the feeling of wonder at being alone in unknown regions of space. This same kind of music also fits well in adventure games (The Longest Journey).
For racing games, it's fast-paced techno as well, like in F-Zero GX :):

It seems to me that no particular genre is the "best". However, there are particular songs that seem to jive prefecftly with the pace of the game. I currently have a playlist of about 10 songs that I play over and over during UT2k4.

I typically put my own stuff on. I'm sure many will be surprised to learn that some classical music can be very "KILL KILL KILL!!!!" For all you music hipsters into the whole Kazaa scene - download Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C-sharp minor. The beginning is slow and quiet, the middle is fast and angry, and the end is LOUD. Playing it is a ton of fun, too.
The one game soundtrack that I've fallen in love with is NOLF (and NOLF2). I think it's perfectly fitting for the game. Oh, and KotOR had a great Star Wars soundtrack, but with original music. Very cool.

well, not only the type of genre of games but the games themselves. For example Europa 1400: The Guild is an RTS/RPG hybrid in a sense you run a business during medieval times and they have a really nice soundtrack which kinda sets up the mood for the game =] BTW, 3DG dont seem to have a review of this classic gem =]

Jeremy Soule is very good.
Usually I don't like having music on though. I find it distracting.
