You might find it silly that I've been anticipating Halo 2 so much since the game has been available (and cheaply too) for the Xbox for several years now. Well since I've never been particularly good with a control pad and couldn’t justify buying a console I've been waiting for its PC release. Now I know the release was several (several) months ago but I had to put buying Halo 2 on the back burner while I played some of this years other important releases (BioShock being one of them). That and the fact that the game has just refused to go down in price since its March PC release, which has quite annoyed me in fact.
Rob might point out that as the game is by todays standards quite dated its not going to have that wow factor that a new title (like Crysis) will have. But I've always loved everything Halo but have felt rather left out not having an Xbox and instead having to wait for Microsoft to twidle their thumbs, wait till Xbox sales of the game have died down and finally decide to release it for PC.
The story of a game is always what catches me the most, and I have been enthrawled with the whole Halo saga. I've read all the books (in this order) from The Fall Of Reach, The Flood, First Strike, Ghosts Of Onyx and am currently reading Contact Harvest, and now anticipating playing Halo 2 to fill in the gaps in the story I love so much. You see although The Flood covered events that take place during Halo 1, none of the books cover the events of Halo 2 and I have felt like someone has just ripped the pages out and I've had to skip around them.
I've viewed everything from scripts of the game levels, the game guide (rather sad really since I don’t even own the game yet and have had the guide for 2 years now!) and also FMV footage. Now I know you might say I have spoiled any surprises in playing Halo 2 but I just couldn’t stand the wait to see what happens anymore! (Only a matter of time I'm sure before I’ll give into temptation and view the videos of Halo 3 taunting me on YouTube). Although I surely know a lot about Halo 2 already I understandably don’t feel like I truly know it because I haven't played it yet.
Now living with my girlfriend I find I have less opportunities to buy and play games, a sacrifice I was aware of and willing to make. Well I've requested Halo 2 for Christmas (along with Crysis and Halflife 2 – Episode 2 if she's feeling generous). I've been nagging the misses for months about it now, she must be getting sick of hearing about it, that and the jokes I keep cracking about when she's going to buy me an Xbox 360.
So needless to say I'm looking forward to playing this game, I've been waiting for years now and the wait is finally nearly over. I just hope the game is going to live up to my anticipation, although I am prepared for the fact that the graphics and gameplay may not be as innovative as the standards I have come to expect over the last year or two, I have a good idea of how the game is going to be and I’ll be posting my impressions of what I think after I play it.
And with that the wait is on to play Halo 3… (Give me another four years and I’ll post a thread about waiting to play that one!)
